U.S.L Red Star 2009/10
20 Jul 2010

Red Star endured a tough but decent season in North Home Counties Division 3. Having stepped up from the Luton Sunday League many feared they would struggle but a 4th place finish and league cup semi-final showed they will be a force in future seasons. A mixed bag of results saw them beat and draw with eventual champions Markyate, suffer 3 losses each to rivals Co-Op and St Johns but pick up wins over every other team in the league.

Red Star Luton's second season in their very short history turned out to be their most successful, with the side winning the Barry Bolton Windows Sunday League. Here is a review of the 2008/9 season

Perfect Start
After a decent first season The Reds were looking to progress. Dean Ashton had continued as Manager and Matt Brunton was named as Captain. They couldn't have started the season in better form. They won their 1st four games, scoring 44 goals and conceding none in the process. There were two comfortable league wins over Luton Renegades and Rising Sun, 11-0 and 14-0 respectively, an 11-0 trashing of Luton Warriors in the League Cup and an 8-0 win the Centenary Cup over then undefeated Dynamo Old Boys. By the end of September the team was in positive mood and looking forward to continuing their great start.

A Challenge Emerges
Red Star were looking like one of the strongest sides in the league but the early pace-setters were St Johns and One Nation. Red Star were confident of catching them up as the season went on. Unfortunately towards the end of October they went down to Luton Warriors, hands down the most unpredictable team in the league. They were a different side from the previous encounter and grabbed a well deserved 3-2 victory over the Reds. Red Star bounced back 5-3 in a brutal encounter with Wheelwrights before defeating another unbeaten side, Heath Panthers, in the Centenary Cup. However Red Star's dream of a treble would be ended in November. Red Star met St Johns for the first time and the league new boys signalled their intentions for the season with a 3-1 win in the League Cup. After the game St Johns celebrated as if they had sealed the cup and league in that one game, an image that would sit with Red Star.

Ups and Downs
Red Star followed their league cup exit by beating BYL 8-2 despite only being able to field 10 men. Red Star then had a chance to avenge their defeat to St Johns. Red Star put in a fantastic performance despite the appalling conditions and were deserved 4-1 winners. Red Star hoped this would be the catalyst to get their season back on track. They were due to play yet another unbeaten side in the Centenary Cup, this time in the shape of Barnfield. The 1st game was called off due to bad weather and rearranged. This left Red Star without 6 first choice players and although they battled hard they fell to a 3-2 defeat and another shot at silverware went out of the window. Red Star followed this by losing to rivals USL Rams. The game had added spice as Red Star had signed Rams full-back Dan Taylor in the week before the game. Rams went out to prove he had made the wrong choice and outplayed Red Star to win 4-2.

The Streak: Part One
Red Star knew things had to change. An enforced break due to the poor winter weather gave the team a chance to recharge and push for the title. They started off by demolishing LAR 10-0 and then battling past the much improved Luton Renegades to win 3-2 with a last minute winner. Red Star then had local rivals USL Rams to play again. The build up to this game was dominated by the fact USL and Red Star had agreed to merge from the 2009/10 season. The Reds dominated the second game and were unlucky not to win more than the 5-3 scoreline suggested. Easy win followed over Chalton (12-0), Wheelwrights (7-1) and Luton Warriors (5-0). This led them to the biggest game of the season against league leaders One Nation. Red Star were at one point 9 points behind One Nation and St Johns, although they had games in hand. Red Star and One Nation then played out the game of the season which saw Red Star win 4-2 and close the gap to two points

The Streak: Part Two
At this point Red Star had won 7 on the bounce, equalling the impressive 7 in a row One Nation had won before the Red Star game, and the games got no easier. Red Star faced St Johns for the 3rd time and they ground out a hard earned 1-0 win. This win put Red Star top of the league for the very first time in their history. Red Star then increased their unbeaten run to 10 games by easing past Chalton 11-0 battling past a determined LAR with a 6-2 win and then they won a 10 goal thriller 6-4 against AC Cadoza. The Cadoza game saw Red Star 5-0 up after a breathtaking 1st half before being pegged back by a combination of hard work from Cadoza and terrible refereeing. Red Star finished April off by beating BYL 4-1. Red Star were then awarded a win over One Nation after Nation failed to turn up for the game. 5 Nation players turned up and waited until kick-off but their team-mates did not turn up. What followed were claims from One Nation that they didn't know about the fixture, they hadn't received the updated list and the players there that day didn't have mobile phones so didn't know if the game was off or on!! It was a sad demise to One Nation's season after winning the league cup. They turned up to one of their last 5 games which saw all 3 title challengers (Red Star, USL Rams and St Johns) awarded wins against them.

Down to the Wire
While most people focused on One Nation and St Johns as the main challengers during Red Star's unbeaten run, The Reds were more worried about USL Rams. Rams won their games in hand and won 5 on the spin (plus 3 points from One Nation) and by May they were up to 2nd. They needed to win all their remaining games and hope Red Star dropped points. In a vital game against St Johns they led for the majority of the game before Saints equalised in the 91st minute of that game. This gave Red Star a chance to win the league against AC Cadoza. There would be no 13th win in a row or title that game though. AC Cadoza fielded the side who had won the NHCSFL Division 1 title the week before and their organisation and experience at a higher level proved too much with them running out 5-2 winners. Some teams may have moaned about this but as all players are signed on for the club it is well within the rules and it showed the Players the level they should aim at. So it went down to the last game of the season for Red Star against bottom placed Rising Sun. Red Star proceeded to put on a season best win of 17-0, which allowed all the regular squad players, bar Dean Ashton, to end the season with a goal and more importantly as Champions

Introduction
Red Star Luton Football Club was founded in 2007 and are based in Luton, Bedfordshire. They will play the 2008-09 season in the Barket Super League. The side's home ground is Barnfield College in Luton. The Club was formed when former Windsor Castle players Dean Ashton, David Mitchell and Matt Brunton decided to build a side. The side was made up of a mix of old Windsor Castle players, Friends and colleagues.

Tough Start
The side played their 1st ever match against United Sporting Luton, who Ashton and Mitchell played for, in August 2007 at Wigmore Park. The game resulted in a 1-1 draw. From there the side hoped to begin their league campaign confidently but were bought down to earth with a 7-3 loss to One Nation and followed that up with a 5-3 loss to MYA.

Winds of Change
The club was struggling with nobody really in charge, so the board hired James McLoughlan to bring some discipline to the side. After a weakened side lost 1-0 to Luton Arndale in the league cup the side put together a good run of performances losing only twice, to Luton Arndale and Stopsley Common, in 12 games. This run saw them defeat Warden Hill Rangers, thrash Wheelwrights twice and put in two outstanding County Cup performances. The loss to Luton Arndale caused a difference of opinion between players and manager and things had taken a turn for the worse. After the New Year there were signs of tension in the squad as they fell to an embarrassing 5-2 defeat to USL Rams. After a 0-0 draw with Warden Hill Rangers, things came to a head between the board and the manager and they parted company.

Push for the Finishing Line
Dean Ashton took over, with help from Mitchell and Brunton, and lead the side on a 4 league match winning streak that saw an 8-0 demolishing of Luton Association Rovers, avenging a loss to USL Rams, in a pulsating match where the Reds were down to 10 men and stole a late victory, A 3-2 win over a good Dunstable Lions Side and A hard fought win and maybe the sides best performance was a 2-1 away win over League Cup Winners Stopsley Common. Sandwiched in between was an unlucky 3-2 loss to Luton Arndale in the County Cup. It would be LA who would end their unbeaten league run with a 3-1 win in another game where the Star's had chances to put them away. the Rivalry with Luton Arndale was a friendly but competitive one that saw them pip us by a goal on three occasions, just showing that bit of quality that makes Champions. The end of the season ended poorly with 2 losses to AC Cadoza, one a 6-5 classic and the other a dominant 3-0 win for AC, with a win over Saints sandwiched in between. The club finished 4th in their 1st season which considering the uncertainty surrounding the club was a fair reflection of the sides quality.

The Season Ahead

The summer period has seen a period of stability with Ashton taking over full-time as manager and Kabir Daved staying on as Captain. The club has also made two great signings from USL Rams. Signing top scorer Ben Jefcoate and USL stalwart Duhaj Zaman, to help the side push for their aim of the Treble
