Our Survey Says… Nathan Gaunt We believe the National Game Strategy is bearing fruit, and that grassroots football is in increasingly good shape, but are we getting it right? A few weeks back, our annual county survey enabled you the opportunity to give your thoughts, with a main prize on offer to a random participant of this survey. Well, a Northamptonshire football volunteer has been picked at random, and Nathan Gaunt from Rushden & Higham Utd FC received over £150s worth of Umbro equipment. The photo shows Nathan receiving this kit from Northamptonshire FA County Development Manager Kirsty Frior. The participation figures in this year’s survey were up over 50% on the previous season, and we're delighted with our local response. Thank you to all those volunteers who gave up their time to take the survey, and well done to Nathan who will now return to Rushden & Higham Utd with his kit in tow.
Sky Cameras arrive for NFA Veterans Final Following a national consultation by Sky Sports News regarding the decline of 11v11 men’s football, the Sky journalists are so impressed with the Northamptonshire FAs development of veteran’s football that they plan to cover the counties showpiece final on Sunday (11th April 2010). Taking place at Rushden & Higham Football Club with a 10:30am kick off, Harpole Veterans will be taking the field to play Corby Hellenic Fisher Veterans, with the action due to be filmed, followed by an interview with Northamptonshire FA County Development Manager Kirsty Frior, so keep your digital boxes tuned to Sky Sports News end of April beginning of May. Following a county-based consultation amongst the Northamptonshire FA Development team, it was decided that an NFA Veteran’s Cup should be introduced, with an impressive 22 teams taking part in the inaugural 2009-10 competition, creating 13 brand-new 11-a-side men’s football teams in the process. Development Manager Kirsty Frior said, “Veteran’s football is an area which we have put a lot of work into, and are thrilled with the response of our footballing public. The NFA Veterans Cup has been so successful that we have since formed a friendly league which six of our teams now complete in on a monthly basis. “We’re currently in the process of reviewing our efforts in this area of the game, and would welcome further teams ahead of the 2010-11 competition.†Veteran’s football is available to all those players aged 35 and over. From ET reporter Catherine Collins Past footballing legends helped to raise hundreds of pounds for charity by taking part in a special match. Former Tottenham Hotspur heroes including ex-England international Graham Roberts dropped in at Rushden & Higham United's ground in Hayden Road, Rushden, on Sunday to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The ex-legends took part in a charity match against a team fielded by Weetabix, which had organised the event. Rushden & Higham United secretary Chris Ruff said the match had been a big success. He said: "There was a great turnout to the match about 350 to 400 hundered Spurs fans came along to see their old heroes. "They came armed with old programmes from the 1980s for the players to sign and there was a lot of interest in the match. "We're not sure how much it has raised yet but we think it must have made about £400 on the gate alone." Other big Spurs names who signed up for the match included Gary Stevens, who played for England, ex-Ireland international Tony Galvin, Mark Falco, Steve Sedgley, Paul Allen and Mickey Hazard, who played for Surs in the 1970s and 1980s before rejoining the team in the 1990s. Among the Weetabix team members was Rushden & Higham United manager Aidy Mann. Mr Ruff added: "Events like this are important to us because they raise the profile of the club and give visitors the chance to see our facilities. It's important to us to be seen as a community club and we are keen to do things to benefit charities." The final score was 2-1 to the Spurs team. The club is now preparing to host the veterans and ladies NFA cup finals which will both be held on April 11
R&HUFC accepted the county FA's request to host the following NFA County cup finals on 11th April - Veterans Cup - Harpole v Corby Hellenic Fisher - Which Harpole won 4-2 on penalties after the game ended 0-0 at full time. Womens Cup - Kettering Town v Northampton Town - was won 2-0 by the latter who play at 2 levels above their opponents.
Whisper it very quietly, but there are signs of recovery at Hereward Teamwear United Counties League Division One club Rushden & Higham United after a disappointing season to date. The Lankies began the campaign as one of the favourites to challenge for promotion, being one of the few UCL Division One clubs with facilities suitable to host Premier Division football. However, under Simon Stewart results were hugely disappointing, although the former Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday defender was hamstrung with a series of injuries to key players. Stewart resigned in November and, after an exellent response to advertising the vacancy, ex-Rushden & Diamonds and Northampton midfielder Aidy Mann was handed the chance to manage his local club. Mann had been helping out Lee Howard (pictured) at Raunds since the start of the season, but it was no secret that he was desperately keen on the Rushden & Higham post. After his appointment, Mann said he was “waiting for the opportunity†to appoint a number two. That wait ended this week with a role reversal of sorts with Howard teaming-up with Mann again after leaving the Shopmates last week. Howard`s position at Kiln Park had become “untenable†after financial problems saw the majority of his squad hand in transfer requests. Some of those players had joined Mann at Hayden Road, including Howard`s son Ryan, as well as two other highly-rated youngsters in Sam Fowler and Lewis O`Dell. Lankies` chairman Steve Whitney was also delighted to welcome Howard to the club. “I was absolutely delighted when Aidy informed me that Lee was joining us after his departure from Raunds. “Lee and I go back a long way. Indeed, he was captain of the very first under-18 team I managed way back in 1984 at Kettering Town! “I have tried to get to work with Lee on previous occasions, but for one reason or another the timings weren`t quite right. “I now believe we have a management and coaching structure in place that will take the club forward. “Aidy is not only the first-team manager - he gets himself involved in all of our other junior teams as well. “We now have sponsorship deals in the pipeline, a game against the Spurs` Legends on March 28th to look forward to and have also welcomed back several people who had left for one reason or another, including former vice-chairman Howard Downs, who has come back as our matchday co-ordinator. “Aidy and Lee are putting together a youthful squad. Eight of our current under-16 side have been signed by neighbours Rushden & Diamonds, so that shows how much talent we have coming through the club. “From what was a very disappointing season, an exciting future is emerging. “We have plans to develop the ground by demolishing the old stand and dressing rooms and we have an excellent relationship with the local council, who are helping us in our quest to find suitable training facilities in the town. “We are not shouting anything from roof tops at the moment – just whispering quietly that we are showing signs of recovery.â€
As the game at Hayden Road against Burton Park Wanderers has fallen victim to the weather the first team played a friendly against Newport Pagnell on the Raunds Manor School artificial surface - the game ended 2-2 with the visitors equalising in the final minute after Stefan Morris and Craig Scriven had scored for us.

NEW MANAGER WANTED 17/11/2009 Simon Stewart resigned as manager of Hereward Teamwear United Counties League Division One club Rushden & Higham United following a 3-2 home defeat by ON Chenecks. Leeds-born Stewart, still only 36, has played under some of the biggest names in British soccer - Ron Atkinson, David Pleat and Trevor Francis at Wednesday and Kevin Keegan and Micky Adams at Fulham. He retired from professional football in 1998 and semi-professional soccer in 2001 after a career interrupted by injuries. At non-League level he played for Geoff Chapple at Kingstonian and during that time featured in seven trophy successes, including back-to-back FA Trophy winners medals. With a sports science degree, Stewart has established and monitored more than ten non-League football academies and had a short spell as manager of Spalding United, then members of the UCL. He joined the Lankies in June 2006 as assistant-manager to youthful player-manager James Le Masurier before taking over as manager couple of years later. Results have been disappointing this season when the club were looking to push towards promotion to the Premier Division. Chairman Steve Whitney said: Simon is a fantastic coach who has the respect of all of the players. However, he simply hasn`t been able to obtain the results he or the club wanted. He has been extremely unlucky with injuries and at one stage had upward of thirty players unavailable to him for one reason or another. We tried to persuade him to stay, but he felt he`d taken the team as far as he could. I have no doubt he will reappear somewhere very soon as his undoubted skills as a coach will be in great demand. In the interim we have asked the vastly experienced Ben Lord and reserve team boss Stuart Brown to take charge of Saturday`s game at Huntingdon. We want to appoint a new manager as quickly as possible, and therefore invite applications by email to me (whitney@btconnect.com) before Monday (November 23rd).
Hereward Teamwear United Counties League Division One club Rushden & Higham United have appointed the experienced Aidy Mann as their new manager. The former Northampton, Torquay, Barnet, Newport County and Rushden & Diamonds player leaves his post as assistant-manager at UCL Premier side Raunds Town to take over at Hayden Road from Simon Stewart, who resigned a fortnight ago. After a lengthy playing career in the Football League, including making over 100 appearances for the Cobblers, Mann kicked-off his managerial career with Higham Town now merged to form Rushden & Higham - back in February 1997 and enjoyed spectacular success, leading the Lankies to their first championship in almost eight years fifteen months later. A lack of facilities at Vine Hill Drive prevented the club from stepping up to Premier Division football, but in 1999 they finished second in Division One. Mann left Higham in September 1999 and has since gained further managerial experience with both Woodford United and Cogenhoe United. The Cooks opted not to retain his services at the end of the 2002/03 season and he rejoined Higham in August 2003. He was then offered the post at UCL Premier Division Long Buckby in the summer of 2004 and enjoyed a successful time at Station Road until the 2006/07 season when results were poor and he was sacked in January 2007. He briefly returned to Hayden Road as a player before moving back into the Premier Division with Newport Pagnell Town to help manager Terry Shrieves on the pitch, often using his vast experience from the substitute`s bench. Rushden & Higham chairman Steve Whitney said: We had eleven applicants for the post, including one from a Brazilian who we reckon got us mixed up with Rushden & Diamonds! Seriously, the standard of applicants was excellent for our level, but in the end we went for Aidy`s experience and local knowledge. Mann takes over first-team duties with immediate effect.

I would just like to say a Big Thank You to everyone who took part and contributed in this weekend's Charity football game. We raised over £300 on the day which takes my total raised so far to well over £2,000. The day itself was great fun, good to see a few old faces, and I was overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone. Let's do it again sometime. Mark Buckby.
Ground of the week: Hayden Road You are in: London > Radio > The Non League Football Show > Ground of the week > Ground of the week: Hayden Road From an article by Stuart Croll (NonLeagueToday) When football teams merge what becomes of the ground that is no longer used bythe amalgamated club? Well in the case of the Rushden & Diamonds merger the Hayden Road ground is still used for football. Rushden & Diamonds were formed on 21 April 1992 by a merger of Rushden Townand Irthlingborough Diamonds. The merger was the brainchild of Max Griggs the owner of Dr. Martens The new club took Rushden Town's place in the Midland Division of the Southern League, but chose to play at Irthlingborough's Nene Park as Hayden Road the home of Rushden - was not good enough for promotion. Hayden Road The club had been demoted from the Premier Division the previous season due to the state of their ground. Hayden Road was given to the town for sport in 1922 as a ten acre plot to be shared between cricket and football. Gradually the two sports played next to each other and a stand facing the football pitch was built. When Rushden Town sold Gordon Inwood to West Bromwich Albion the transfer money was used to concrete three sides of the ground. Floodlights were erected in 1976 but the ground was showing its age and the Southern League deemed it as failing to meet its ground grading requirements. So when the new amalgamated club started they chose Nene Park as their home venue and developed that. Hayden Road on the other hand was offered to local juvenile club Rushden Rangers in 1994. On the 19th May 1995 a meeting was held at Rushden & Diamonds and the offer from Rushden Rangers was made to purchase the facilities at Hayden Road. Rushden Rangers Rushden Rangers played at the old venue until 2007 when they themselves merged with Higham Town to become Rushden and Higham United FC. Rushden Rangers continued as a youth football club for one season before changing their name to Rushden and Higham United. Unlike the Rushden & Diamonds merger the new club decided to play at Hayden Road. With assistance from the Stadia Improvement fund the old ground was given a bit of an upgrade allowing the new club to play in the United Counties League. Also it is refreshing that an old football ground wasn't lost to a housing or retail development and Hayden Road can still be visited
