Jimmy Woods was himself a player in the olden days when the Anfield Junior Soccer League first upped their posts on the "soon to be" hallowed turf of Stanley Park - way back in 1972, playing for league founder members ABBEY UNITED - (who are they...)
"I have a dream..." as most dads do of their sons playing for a Premiership club and walking out at Wembley Stadium.
Anyway, at the age of 8yrs old, son number one with his band of merry men from a local school joined together to form a football team - then known as Richmond Rovers, originating from the local public house the Richmond Arms - on Breck Road.
The Raith part of the name didn't actually come into existance until the following season - when looking to take on board a new "proper club" badge, an innocuous letter to Raith Rovers was sent to the Scottish club requesting the usage of their "RR badge".
The reply is now history - and todays name was then born in 1998.
Actual Raith Rovers replica strips were sent down for the kids to play in and visits have been made to Dumfries playing matches over the years against Cowdenbeath & Raith Rovers junior sides at Starks Park ground.
1997 the club was founded as Richmond Rovers and played in the Anfield JSL, although LCFA registered as R'Mond Rovers
1999 saw the club winning its first ever trophy in the Umbro International in Manchester. A name chance saw the club unite with the Scottish Raith Rovers - now called Richmond Raith Rovers
2000 Richmond went on its greatest ever match winning sequence which saw them undefeated in the Anfield JSL for two and a half seasons! Winning a treble and a double the following season.
2001 A League & Cup Double for the u12s
2002 Two more teams join the set up, as two u10s sides join the Rovers, RRR Lutine & RRR Willowbank (two more thirst quenching holes either side of the Richmond Tavern)
2004 The Veterans side surfaced its head over a couple of pints of beer in a local establishment, The Claremont, and to be honest have probably surprised themselves more than their supporters (their children) with a wee smile on each others faces most Saturday afternoons.
2006 LCFA Cup Winners VETS, was the only trophy picked up by the Vets in their three year stint, but one of the biggest awards they could've won. The u18s finished runners-up in West Cheshire Youth League (West Kirby), Youth Plate (West Kirby 2-5) and LCFA u18s trophy (Bootle 1-2).
2007 u18s runner-up in Youth division again to Cammell Laird, Richmond applied for membership of the West Cheshire 3rd division and were duly elected members with the majority of the vote beating 4 other clubs!
2008 u16s finish Runners-up in Tuebrook league campaign, as the Open Age team finish 4th and are beaten finalists in the Shield to Runcorn Town Res (0-3).
A minor name change saw the club become known locally as RRR Jacobs, playing out of the Jacobs biscuits site in Long Lane Aintree and the u17s join the West Cheshire Youth division
2009 The Jacobs name was wiped clean and the Richmond Raith Rovers name was eventually given its full title. A new venue for home matches at Childwall Sports College and with it a 3rd place finish giving them promotion to Division Two of the West Cheshire
2010 Childwall Sports Centre again hosts Richmond Raith Rovers for the forthcoming 2010-11 campaign
A number of players have left the Rovers to go on to much bigger and brighter opportunities no one more so than two of our most talented females who've shown they can certainly surpass even the best of the lads..
FAYE McCOY (Liverpool Ladies & ENGLAND -2001)
JESSICA MOORE (Everton Ladies & ENGLAND u16's -2001/2003)
KARL CLAIR (Liverpool FC 2001/2002)
DAMIEN EASTHAM (Huddersfield 2001)
DALE JENNINGS (Tranmere Rovers 2001)
Damien EASTHAM has recently been awarded a YTS with HUDDERSFIELD TOWN, which we at the club are very proud to be associated with and wish him and the rest of the players every success for the now and the future. (Now with Southport)
Whilst Faye McCOY has recently transfered from Everton to Blackburn and is now at LIVERPOOL.
Karl CLAIR has played a number of youth matches for LIVERPOOL and played in last years Youth Cup semi-final v Arsenal.
Dale JENNINGS recently made his first team debut, coming on and scoring the winner for TRANMERE ROVERS at the tender age of 17yrs. Congratulations to him, we all knew at the club that one day Dale would find success at the top level. He was Jimmy's first ever player to be scouted and signed by Liverpool at 9yrs of age.
As far as I am aware all of the ex-RRR players are still with their clubs and hopefully in a couple of years we'll be seeing a lot more of each of them on Sky Sports...
