Richmond Vikings are a local basketball team that was created as a social sports club by a group of friends with an interest in basketball back in 2005. In the past 3-4 years the club has progressed from being purely a social past time and has developed a hunger for success and a competitive edge to drive it forward. In the past 4 seasons the club as managed a 2nd and 3rd place finish in the Teesside Basketball League Division 1, a Teesside League Division 1 Cup win and also a Runner up place in the same cup. The club boasts 4 qualified coaches within its ranks and are able to offer training to all age groups. The club play out of Risedale Community college in Catterick Garrison and Senior Training is Mondays 7pm-9pm witch Junior training at the same venue on Wednesdays 6pm-9pm.
The club is in a period of transition and is starting to take steps forward into improving its stature in the surrounding area and is aiming to continue this improvement as high as possible. This claim is supported with Richmond being accepted in the 2011/2012 National Founders Cup competition which is one of England Basketball’s longest running and most prestigious cup competitions. This is the first time in the clubs history that they have entered a competition of this standard and after a 4th place finish in their group and a rough baptism in the Founders Cup, the Vikings are aiming for improvements in the 2012/2013 campaign and have targeted a last 16 finish at least.
2012/2013 also sees Richmond entering the newly formed Northern League Basketball league and they are setting themselves high expectations after a series of successful friendly results against some of the teams that are going to be involved in the league.
All in all the 2012/13 is an exciting prospect with the club looking to challenge for honors in 3 leagues and some tantalizing matchups are expected from as far north as Carlisle right down to Blackburn. The club is actively seeking new sponsors for the new season and there has already been some level of interest in this area. Along with sponsors the club are actively seeking new players and are encouraging players of all ages and levels to get in touch if they are interested in playing this year.
