R.V.J.F.C. WASPS vs. ST JOSEPHS F.C.

R.V.J.F.C 2-2 ST JOSEPHS F.C.

The Wasps since their last victory have moved to a new venue. Since the investment into the team by a Saudi-Arabian consortium, the Wasps now play at All Saints High School and the pitch like the stags were in great condition.

The Visitors, St Josephs, were themselves on great form, only losing one game so far this season; this was set to be a great contest.

The first half began with St Josephs taking the game to the Wasps, great work in the centre of the park saw the visitors, almost take an early lead, if it was not for the Wasps keeper Ashton Greenwood, who made two great saves in the first half, one on the eight minute mark, where the keeper dived to his low left and kept hold of the ball which at times seemed to be like a bar of soap due to the damp conditions, and another soon after when Ashton gathered the ball from a well taken shot just outside the penalty area.

It was surprising and unlike the Wasps to give away possession of the ball as cheaply has they did throughout the first half and eventually the stags were punished by the visitors, two great strikes from the team fromAccringtonsaw them take a two nil lead by the end of the first half.

At half time the Wasp’s manager had one or two words to say about the performance of the Rossendale side in the first half, with four changes in the side for the start of the second half, saw a more resilient and determined team performance.

The second half saw the Wasps take a more controlled attitude to the game, this time they seemed to be more reluctant to give the ball away as easily as they did at the start of the game. Harry Carpenter was put through by Vickers who just managed to blaze the ball over the cross bar, but great team work by the stags saw more chances come the Wasps way, it was clear to see that the visitors were becoming under more pressure. Good efforts on the opposition goal came from Coupe, Vickers, Worswick and Carpenter, but the home team just could not convert their chances.

The game was being dominated in midfield by the stags, the manager then decided to change the shape of the team by playing a 2-3-1, formation, the ball was now being played out wide to the flanks were the crosses into the visitors penalty area became more intensive as the second half wore on. It was not until late in the game were the stags hard work started to pay off, a great ball wide by Vickers to Carpenter saw the wing man produce a great run and a quality cross to the far post were Ellis Kay, scored on the half Volley to make it 2 -1, a great finish by the young man who was making his first league debut.

The pressure by the stags that was put on the visiting team was relentless, Liam Coupe broke out of his own half, beat his man, but was consequently brought down 5 yards from the opposition’s penalty area, and a free kick was awarded. Coupe then delivered a great ball into the penalty were a scramble for the ball was made, Constant fired at goal but it was saved, the ball re-bounded off the keeper to Vickers whose shot was blocked by the defender, the ball bounced around the penalty area, only to fall to the feet of young Ellis Kay who slammed the ball in to the back of the net, to save the Wasps blushes, and make it 2-2, no soon after the re-take from the centre spot the referee blew for full time. A draw from the jaws of defeat, saw the Wasps maintain there unbeaten streak.

Over all the team were far from there best, but the team worked hard in the second half and produced the goods, well done boys! Man of the Match, Ellis Kay.
