The original Santiago Colts FC was formed in 1978 to enable leavers from two local schools, St. James and St. Columbas, to maintain their friendships as they dispersed to different secondary schools. It was a one team club that played for 5 years until its members reached the age of 16, winning several trophies on the way.
The club was reformed in 2003 with a new squad of 11 year olds. This time with the intention to broaden its appeal through development of a multi-team structure from 7 to 16 age groups.
Under the watchful eyes of the committee, and with the delighted support of the original team's founders, the aim was to take Santiago Colts FC to FA Charter Standard and provide a key playing opportunity for local young footballers keen to develop their skills within a safe and organised environment.
Santiago Colts are proud of the fact they were awarded FA Charter Standard status in October 2003. Their intention now is to keep building the club with the hope of reaching the status of an FA Charter Standard Development Club.
In their first season, Santiago Colts Under 12's finished third in their division and also reached the Major Cup Final, just losing out 7-5 to Pheonix United in a close fought and thoroughly entertaining match. (Photos - password protected)
March 2004 saw the start of three more age groups for Season 2004/05 - Under 7's, Under 11's and Under 16 Girls. Santiago Colts were awarded the privilege of providing the Ball Boys and Girls for the 2004/05 FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Arsenal at Cardiff. (Photos - password protected)
July 2005 saw the start of an Under 9's team. At the end of season 2005/06, the U16 Girls team become Champions of their league, unbeaten all season, winning all their league games except their last of the season where they were held to a draw. They also got to the Quarter Finals of the Cup narrowly losing to Coventry City FC. Unfortunately, due to most of this team having to step up to Open Age football the following season, this age group finished in August 2006. The Club were also very sorry to see the existing U12 team also finish at this time due to manager unable to commit fully for the next season.
A new Under 8's team was formed mid 2006 ready for the 2006/07 season.
More age groups are planned for the future, subject to volunteers. If you know any one or are interested yourself, please contact us at - info@santiagocolts.co.uk for further details.
The next generation of Beckhams, Owens, Campbells and Shearers may already be out there on the parks and pitches around our city. They may even be at Santiago Colts FC!
