Leam visited Seaton on a very warm day with the bare 9 players and with Seaton having 14 girls the signs were promising. From the kick off Leam caught Seaton a little flat footed and the first 5 minutes were pretty even with both sides probing for an opening. Evie was indeed called upon a couple of times and made one excellent diving save.
Seaton then started to dominate, early signs of the goals to come when Casey and Alys linked really well up front with a number of 1-2s resulting in a shot straight to the keeper. Ella, Beth and Emily were battling really hard to win and keep posession, which was allowing our forwards and attacking midfielders to get into the game and create chances... and then Casey beat a defender squared the ball and Alys to side foot home to great cheers. The season had started!
Seaton were now full of confidence and the football was flowing. The defence and midfield were creating space with Kate and Beth linking really well down the left. However the next goal game from flowing play down the right as Millie played a great ball in to Casey who very coolly chipped the keeper for what was a great goal.
Casey and Kate both went close with shots before Casey hit a cross that found Kate in the box and she hit a sweet volley to make it 3-0. Casey then had a great solo run taking on 3 defenders and shooting from the edge of the box for 4-0. Leam were still attacking and the Seaton defence was looking really strong, with Lauren's speed and Evie's comfortable handling making this a very nice game for the home crowd to watch.
The next goal came when Kate turned the Leam captain, got a yard of space then hit her shot into the bottom corner for 5-0. Ella then hit a great shot from the edge of the box, hitting the bottom of the far post. Rachel and Ella were now controlling in the midfield and the chances were still coming.
Play was now being interrupted as the Seaton substitutes were rolling on and off and the last Seaton goal came as Shelby in her first league game burst through with Stazia. The girls combined well and Stazia's shot rolled over the line for 6-0. There were more chances in the half, Alys indeed had a very 'reasonable' chance... but half time was to be 6-0 and things looking comfortable.
The 2nd half was to be a very different game. Ella was forced off after twisting her ankle and the big lead meant that the girls naturally eased off a little. This left Leam with a lot of the ball and our defence facing a battle against attack after attack. Christie, Emily, Beth, Lauren and Evie stood tall though and battled really, really hard to try and keep a clean sheet.
That isn't to say we didn't create chances, in fact Rachel should've had a penalty and Kate had a 'reasonable' chance to score... For long periods the game was end to end as passing football lost out to long balls out of defence. Late on Leam got the goal that their continued efforts warrented to make the final score 6-1.
There was far too much action in this game to mention all of it and to give every girls a decent shout out. However, Shelby did really well in her first league game. Robyn battled on despite painful blisters and aches. PoM goes to Evie for a very assured game in goal, but she was pushed really close by Casey, Emily and Kate.
Well done girls a great first half and good in parts in the second - a great start to the season.
