MEMORABLE SHAFT' MATCHES

Shaftesbury 4 – 2 Park Head(AET)
League Plate Semi-final 21/03/2003

Against our oldest rivals in this dramatic Semi-final. Shaft’ storm into the lead via the cannon-like left of Danny Spears. An O.G later and we are 2 goals up. Before half time a harsh pen is awarded to Park Head after the ball strikes Dave Jones on the arm. 2 – 1 at the break. Park Head come storming out in the 2nd half. On the hour their striker Paul “Hello I know you!” Allan follows through on Shaft’ goalie Sean Collins, who kicks out and gets a straight red. With no GK sub, Richard Stranks puts on the maulers. The final whistle moments away, Allan gets the ball on the far left touch-line and crosses, the ball is caught by a freak gust of wind & loops over Rich, levelling the game at 2 – 2. E.T: 10-man Shaft play the game of their lives but Park Head nearly net first. They waste their chances, then, just before half time, we take the lead after Ben Bird bundles the ball in from a corner. Park Head have to score leaving them open, in the 2nd half, we counter, and Luke Sherrington stabs home to take us to Redhill.

Shaftesbury 3 - 1 Southbank ‘A’
League Plate Quarter-final
09/03/2003

David vs.Goliath, Southbank were flying at the top of the Prem, Shaft had played only a handful of games in their 1st season together. The outcome most thought was inevitable. Southbank score first early, the slaughter it seemed was about to begin. Enter the “Great Raymondo”. Scoring his 1st goal for the club, Ray Collins equalised, then before half time, Nick Bevan poached and took Shaftesbury into a dream lead. The expected Southbank comeback never happened. 2 of their players saw red in the 2nd half. Adding to this, Ed Moulton broke their star striker’s leg. 9-man Southbank were falling apart. Their fate was sealed with a Ben Bird strike in the last 10. 3 – 1 to the Shaft’ in the biggest upset of the season.

Team: Murdoch, Nayman, Moulten, Winter, Jones (L.Bedford), B.Bird, Stranks, Godson(c), Spears (D.Bedford), Bevan, Collins.
Subs Not Used: Williamson.
Goals: Collins, Bevan, B.Bird.
Ground: King George's Playing Fields

Shaftesbury 0 - 1 Thornton Eagles
League Plate Final
11/05/2003

1st season, 1st Cup Final. Bad news before K.O, no Ray Collins after a dodgy Chinese the night before. A healthy squad of 15 make the trip to Redhill. Again like previous rounds, we were massive underdogs, however it was us that had the best chances of the 1st half, Sam Bird grazing the crossbar just before the interval. The 2nd half was even until Ed Moulton gave away a harsh free kick on the edge of our box. A short pass split our defence & the ball found its way into the net. Chances were scarce after that and the score stayed 1 –0. We may have lost the game, but we gained a lot of respect from our opponents, and the teams in the higher divisions.

Team: Murdoch, Nayman (L.Bedford), Moulton, Winter, Williamson (Jones), B.Bird, Stranks, Godson(c), Spears, S.Bird, Bevan.
Subs Not Used: D.Bedford, Purchase.
Ground: Redhill Football Ground

Shaftesbury 5 - 0 Merton Athletic
Chairman’s Cup Semi-final
03/04/2005

Again underdogs against a team we'd never beaten. On this hot May afternoon however, everything went right, and we put in arguably our finest performance to date. A cagey start, although nerves settled when Luke Sherrington and Ben Bird sent us in to a well-deserved 2-goal lead. Merton threatened to pull one back before half time. They didn’t and the lead lasted into the 2nd half. On the hour, Tom Pickard got our 3rd, and a mouthful of their keeper’s boot after a beautiful diving header. We could relax, more so when they scored an unfortunate O.G to take us to 4 goals up. With 10 mins left, Ray Collins converted from the spot and secured an impressive and unexpected 5 – 0 win.

Team: Boyle, Forward, Jones, Moulton, Williamson (Purchase), B.Bird (Bevan), Pickard (Godson), Winter(c), Spears, Sherrington, Collins.
Goals: Sherrington, B.Bird, Pickard, Collins (pen).
Ground: Raynes Park Vale Football Ground
