Club History |
Written and photographic records of Sherborne FC can be traced back as far as 1947, when the club was reformed after the war. At that time they were known as Sherborne Rovers.
They started off in Div 5 of the Cheltenham league, but by 1950 were playing in Div 3, alongside teams such as Cavendish House , and Tewkesbury Town.
They were finding life quite easy in this division and on 28/10/1950 cruised into the third round of the league cup, beating Tewkesbury YMCA 13-0. 10 of those goals scored by Eric Saunders, one of 3 brothers who played in the team.
On 3/2 1951 they went into the fifth round, beating Whaddon Athletic 10-3 and on 17/3/1951 they made it to the final by beating Alderton 5-2.
By 1st March 1951 they were 7 points clear at the top of Div 3 having scored 105 goals and conceeding only 22. At the time of writing this (2006) Harry Taylor, the goalkeeper is still alive and kicking!
By the end of the season they were clear winners of Div 3. They were also runners up in the Cheltenham charities cup, and semi finalists in the Gloucestershire northern minor cup.
Eric saunders was the top goal scorer with 84 goals in all competitions.
They started life in Div 2 with a derby match over arch rivals, Northleach Town, and even though they could only field 10 men they went on to win 3-2, and remained unbeaten until 12/1/1952 when St Pauls UTD won 3-2 in the third round of the Gloucestershire Junior cup.
Still unbeaten in the league, on 19/1/1952 with 3 inches of snow on the ground they entertained Northleach at home with a crowd of over 300 spectators. The final result 2-2.
Their first home defeat was not until 15/3/1952 when they were beaten 3-1 by Bishops Cleeve.
ON 11/4/1952 they were held to a 1-1 draw with Carterton in the Burford Hospital cup. The replay on 21/4/1952 was a 3-3 draw resulting in another replay. Sherborne finally prevailed to win 3-1 on 25/4/1952.
That was their only honour that year where they finished 5th in Div 2.
Eric Saunders remained top goal scorer with 45.
Sherborne continued to play in the Cheltenham league for several more years, but as players retired or moved on they could no longer sustain a team, and the club folded.
Sherborne Rover were reformed in the eighties, some of the lads being sons of the original team, but again due to lack of players the club folded after a few years.
The current team, now known as Sherborne Harriers has played at Sherborne park for 5 years.
Originally formed a U9 level, they played as Northleach Town Juniors, but parted company after 5 years and moved up to Sherborne Park.
They played from U12 to U15 in the Cirencester Youth league and then moved to the North Wilts youth league where they played for 2 years at U16 and U17.
2005/06 was their fist year in the Cheltenham mens league, and making the transition from youth to mens football was a learning curve for all concerned!
The land on which the ground is situated was left to the people of the village by Lord Sherborne, and is looked after by the playing fields committee.
The whole of Lord Sherbornes estate was eventually taken over by the National Trust, and the clubs facilities are poor in comparison to other clubs in the league mainly due to restrictions imposed by the National Trust.
The pavilion is the original from 1947, the only difference being it no longer has a thatched roof . It still has no electricity supply
Work is ongoing both inside and outside the pavilion, and the aim is to improve the facilities for the benefit of everyone who uses it.
The clubs aim has always been to promote the enjoyment of the game of football, and we hope to continue for many years.
