Report

Shildon AFC were at home on Saturday 20th August 2011 in an Extra Preliminary Round game of the F.A. Cup. They beat Consett, who were league runners-up last season by a close encounter 2 - 1 score-line.
Early on Shildon's Steven Baptist weaved his way through only to narrowly miss the target.
For the first 20 mins. both teams tested each other out at a fast pace.
On 28 mins. the Railwaymen were awarded a very dubious penalty for hand-ball, which Warren Byrne converted with ease.
Consett should have levelled the score when No 6 David Scorer shot over from just 5 yards out.
Two mins. later Lee Chapman was through but he failed to capitalise.

Half Time:  Shildon  1  Consett  0

The 2nd half was end to end stuff, with both teams creating chances. The first being Shildon's Leon Scott, who hit the post on 49 mins.
A minute later Warren Byrne headed just over the bar.
For Consett, star man Mark Walton's free kick hit the post and bounced out.
On the hour, it was all square, when Consett' No 11 Mark Eccles was fouled and from the free kick Mark Walton blasted home a brilliant shot from 30 yards out, giving keeper Keith Finch no chance.
Immediately after, Warren Byrne was completely through, but he was brought down by keeper Peter Jameson, who was red carded. He was replaced by Barry Poskett who couldn't stop Warren Byrne's pile-driver penalty.
Ten men Consett pressed forward and were denied an equaliser by a good block save from Keith Finch from Mark Walton.
With Consett's defence becoming stretched, two Shildon breaks could have produced another goal.   A Warren Byrne close range drive was well stopped by Barry Poskett and Danny Richmond was through but he just over-ran the ball.
Shildon were living dangerously, and with only two minutes remaining were lucky not to concede another goal, when Consett's Lewis Teasdale's shot was goal-bound, but Keith Finch got a slight touch on the ball, which hit the post and went clear.
The home supporters were happy to hear the final whistle.

Final Score:  Shildon  2  Consett  1

Goal Scorers:  Byrne 28, 68

Bookings:  None

Subs:  Toft for Baptist 46, Price for Chapman 58, Gardner for Scott 83.

Man-of-the-Match:  Warren Byrne, closely followed by Richard Paxton, who was solid all day.

After the game, manager Gary Forrest said "I thought we looked a little tired today, after Wednesday's effort. It was a laboured performance with us giving the ball away far too cheaply. Nevertheless, Consett are a good side, and this was the F.A. Cup where anything can happen".

In the next round Shildon have been drawn away to Guisborough Town. The game to be played on Saturday 3rd September 2011.
