History of Slade Green F.C.

Slade Green is a suburb of Erith situated close to the industrial development alongside the River Thames between Woolwich and Dartford. Originally Slade Green was represented by three club’s - The Wasps, St Augustines and Southern Railway Sports. On the 6th June 1946 in a meeting at the Railway Hotel in Slade Green these three clubs merged and Slade Green Athletic F.C. (renamed Slade Green F.C. in 1986) was born. The newly formed club set up home on a local piece of land which they named ‘The Glen’. The ground was renamed ‘The Small Glen in 1987 in recognition of the late Charlie and Gert Small who had been involved with the club since it’s inception. Slade Green’s inaugural season was one of instant success as they captured the Erith Hospitals Cup (3-1 v Horns Cross) and the Kent Benevolent Cup (2-1 v Medway Rovers). They were denied a hat-trick of cup successes though when they suffered defeat at the hands of Horns Cross in the Dartford League Cup Final. Twelve months later Green again appeared in the Dartford League Cup Final and this time were victorious courtesy of a 2-0 triumph over Horton Kirby Paper Mills. In 1949 there was yet more success when a 2-1 victory over Baker Sports secured Green the Erith Hospitals Cup once again. In that same season Green narrowly missed out on claiming the Dartford League title finishing as Runners Up. The Green completed the season level on points with Baker Sports and the two clubs met in a play off which Bakers won 3-1 to claim the championship. In 1952 Green joined the Kent Amateur League promptly winning the Division Two title at the first attempt. This success was surpassed the following year as Green were crowned Division One Champions remaining unbeaten and scoring 144 goals in the process. This was part of a League and Cup double as Green lifted the Erith Hospitals Cup for the third time following a 3-0 win over Belvedere Albion. There was also an appearance in the Kent Amateur League Cup Final where Green succumbed 3-1 to Tanber Utd. Having gained promotion to the Senior Division Green were granted Senior status and in 1960 they overcome Mottingham 3-1 to win the Kent Amateur League Cup. Meanwhile a 6-2 mauling of Brentstonians earned Green the West Kent Challenge Cup. The 1960/61 season saw Green emerge as Senior Division Champions and shortly after this they were elected to the Greater London League. A 1-0 defeat of Bexley Utd gave Green the 1966 West Kent Cup and after finishing as Greater London League Runners Up in 1969 Green became members of the Kent League upon the start of the 1970/71 campaign. Green reached their first major final in 1981 going down 2-1 to Crockenhill in a replayed Kent Senior Trophy Final following a 0-0 draw. Just two years later Green progressed through to the Kent League Cup Final and claimed the trophy following a 2-1 win over Faversham Town. The club’s greatest day came in April 1992 when a 3-1 eclipse of Tunbridge Wells saw the club take the Kent Senior Trophy.
