An Introduction to Southam United FC
21 Aug 2010

Southam United are a true grassroots football club situated in the small Midland rural town of Southam, Warwickshire.
Offering coaching and development opportunities to players of all ages and both gender, the Club prides itself on its friendly and welcoming environment and plays a vital role in the local community.

The Men's First Team currently play in the Midland Football Combination Premier Division at Step 6 in the non-league pyramid system with the Ladies First Team, following 2 successive promotions, playing in the West Midlands Women's Regional League.

Known as the Saints, they celebrated their Centenary in 2005, having been founded in 1905 following the amalgamation of two village teams. From 1947 to 1956 the club dominated the Coventry and North Warwickshire League.
They took the step up to the Midland Combination in 1980-81 and immediately won the Division Three title. When the League was reorganised in 1983-84, United were placed in the Premier Division, but after several seasons of struggle they were downgraded to Division Two when it was discovered that their pitch was now too short owing to the construction of a bowling green next to it.
Finally in 1995-96 United made it back to the Premier Division after two promotions in seven years.

The 1997-98 season was the Saints' most successful as they finished as Premier Division runners up and also won the Birmingham County FA Vase with a 3-0 victory over Shirley Town.

All time leading goal scorer and also record appearance holder is Bob Hancocks who is still actively involved with the club today as groundsman and match secretary (along with wife, Anne).
In June 2002, Bob and Anne received a presentation from the Club to mark their 50 years of loyal service to Southam United.
Mr Hancocks first played for the team when he was just 15 years old and during his career at the Saints scored over 1,200 goals, including a staggering 18 hat tricks in one season !
Season 1960/61 was his heyday for the club when he scored 85 goals and the team netted 115 while conceeding only 23.

In 2001, Saints merged with Southam Town FC, a progressive junior club formed in 1972, which amongst other achievements, pioneered ladies and girls football in Warwickshire.

Saints finished 3rd in each of seasons 2007/08 and 2008/09 and, in addition, won the Birmingham County FA Midweek Floodlit Cup in 2008/09 with a 3-1 win over Darlaston Town in the final played at the ground of Solihull Moors.

Southam United have a clear ambition to play in higher leagues divisions and develop at all levels of the Club. This will include relocation and new facilities, but not very far from the current location, that will support promotion to step 5 and above.

Recently the club structure was fortified with the exciting new appointment of former West Bromwich Albion & Burnley player and highly experienced UEFA Pro License Coach, Jason Withe, the son of former Aston Villa and England International Peter Withe, as Director of Football, and Luke Foggarty who joined us from Massey Ferguson as Assistant Manager at the start of the 2009/10 season, was appointed as First Team Manager.

Supported by its thriving junior and academy sections and a dedicated force of FA qualified managers, coaches and other helpers, the Club are working towards making Southam United FC a major force in non-league football in the Midlands in the next 5 years.
