| CHAMPIONS again! Semi-pro awaits! |
Sport London e Benfica has made history by becoming CHAMPIONS of the Premier Division of the Cherry Red Middlesex County Football League! Not only has this team made club history but it has also made history in the eyes of the Portuguese community by becoming the first Portuguese Football Club to reach the semi-pro leagues in the English National League System.
The club has taken another step closer to the professional game. Although only in its second year, the club has climbed up two levels of the ladder with top grades: “This season we finished 3 points clear of Neasden Foundation who were very worthy opponents”, explains José Viana, the young Portuguese manager whose focus and ambitions for Sport London e Benfica since his two years at the club have never faltered. He adds: “The plan was always to concentrate on winning the league and moving up a Division. However we still managed to reach the semi-finals of the Middlesex FA Intermediate Cup for the second year running.”
Now, after another season of whole-hearted dedication and hard work from all of those involved – training two times a week, sometimes playing three times, the manager having to perform a multitude of administrative tasks as well as coaching and leading his team - the Spartans South Midland Football League Division 1 awaits. Being Champions 2 years running, expectation is high. Only time will tell what next season’s squad can achieve but José Viana remains focused and determined: “My philosophy has always been to aim high and to reach even higher. I have full confidence in my squad and in my back-room staff – although we could always do with more behind the scenes assistance. We have everything to win and nothing to lose.”
