After winning two seasons on the trot, the expectation was high to repeat the success. The short break between ending the Middlesex County Football League(end of May) and starting the Spartans (early August) did not give us time to prepare properly. Hence, the 4 defeats in the first 7 games. Not that we were that much off the pace but with players on holiday, inexperience meant that we were losing by the odd goal. The Christmas period was much the same and coupled with players leaving, some to Dubai, some to the West Indies, some to Church duty, we were just not consistent enough.
The consistency let us down against the more important opposition - those contesting the fight for promotion and despite coming eighth overall, we were really not that far away from being promoted once again. Five wins was all that was needed.
As players became accustomed to the more demanding level and commitment, the future is looking bright for the next season. If the main body of the squad stayed, and a few new players added, this would surely put us in a strong position.
The squad had made an important step in our 10 year plan. FA Vase competition awaits us next season, and the talent we have promises much.
Now that we have had time to reflect and evaluate what we had achieved in such a short space of time, bring on 2008/09!
