On a bitter afternoon here at the seaside, Gate entertained Barnoldswick Town who were Gate's final league fixture of an upand down season.
Gate had the better of the opening half hour playing much more fluently than they did just 5 days earlier, but it wasBarnoldswick the visitors who broke the deadlock on the half hour, Aaron Hollindrake finishingoff with a low drilled shot under the gate keeper.
Gate equalised on 45 minutes, good work from Chris Bennettand Scott Harries whom incidently has been involved in all of the 44 league games throughout the season findingthe unmarked Adam Cragg at the back post to tap in from 5 yards. Into thesecond half and it was the away side who dominated. Harry Thompson making it2-1 on 62 minutes after a mix up in the gate defence.
Scott Harries did well to create himself and one on one withthe keeper but his shot was saved by Marko Maros. Both sides had a number of chances, and an entertaining second half saw the ball cover every blade on the park. Gate had further chances toequalise, Chris Bennett’s volley in the 75th minute the pick of thebunch. Squires Gate keeper Neil Beesely pulled off a string of fine saves, including a penalty however, with Gate’s legstiring Barnoldswick struck twice in the last five minutes to seal all 3 points andend their season on a high.
Gate player manager Russ Mckenna said “It’s obviously adisappointing end to the season. I thought the game was fairly even for thefirst 60 minutes but their second goal gave them the momentum to push on. Wetried to press but tiredness told and they scored two late goals.
