On Saturday 5th August, Barrhill JFC held their annual funday at their home ground at the of Summerville Road, Irlams o'th' Height.
The day is held to raise money for the club, and "things to do" included - Tombola, Donkey rides, bouncy castles, open age six-a-side tournament, BBQ, beer and the highlight of the day is a football match between "The Allstars" (including DJ Mike Sweeney, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks stars) against the managers and coaches of Barrhill JFC.
The morning started with the open age six-a-side tournament and the Staff Of Life entered a squad of 12 players to take part. Other clubs from the Manchester area took part including teams from the Eccles Sunday League, making 11 teams in total.
The Staff Of Life were drawn in group one with 4 other teams including last years' champions Window Lickers. The Staff won their first 3 games without conceding any goals, as did Window Lickers. The teams played each other and ground out a 0-0 draw. Both teams qualified for the semis, with Window Lickers going through as group leaders by way of goals scored.
In the semis, Window Lickers beat the runners up of group two. The Staff were forced to play the runaway winners of group two, and beat them convincingly 3-0. This meant the two rivals from group one would battle it out in the final.
The final started as a tense affair, but after 5 minutes Dom Bailey rose like a Salmon to connect with a cross to head The Staff into the lead. Window Lickers threw everything at The Staff but were unable to break down our defence. When the referee blew his final whistle, The staff had won 1-0 and had gone throughout the tournament without conceding a single goal. They were about to be crowned champions and receive a trophy more sought after than The FA Cup, The Champions League Trophy and the World Cup, - this was The Barrhill six-a- side trophy,- and it was OURS!!
The trophy was presented to the team captain Andy Bailey by non other than, the one, the only, the rootin' tooting, sweet left foot, Bob Hinder, Club Secretary for Barrhill JFC.
Celebrations went on into the early hours of Sunday morning, and later that day the stars of The Staff paraded the trophy throughout the streets of Swinton, in an open top shopping trolley, where, an elderly couple and their pet Jack Russell observed from a bus stop.
The trophy was placed in pride of place at the pub, where it will remain for the next year.
