Report

St Clears 2nds 2-1 Letterson 2nds

Referee: Dean   Boswell.
Assistants: Angus Scourfield, John Lewis.
Fourth official: adrian Lewis

A long range strike from St Clears’ player manager Andrew Edwards sealed the trophy for his   side after they had trailed 1-0 at Monkton Lane, scoring from fully 45 yards as his speculative lob sailed over keeper Andrew Sharp's head and into the net.
This long-range effort came just moments after Saints striker Simon Bancroft had cancelled out   Michael Williams' first half goal for Letterston and it was a result that had seemed unlikely as Letterston dominated the early proceedings. Strikers Michael Williams and Brian Mathias both went close before Saints keeper Peter Griffiths also produced a superb save from a Ben Franklin header. Franklin threatened again on 23 minutes when his 25-yard-shot curled inches over the bar.

LETTERSON LEAD

But his side finally took the lead five minutes later, when Williams cut in from the right and rifled a left foot shot into the far corner. Bancroft did shoot wide from the edge of the area for the Saints before Mathias tested Griffiths with a free kick at the other end. Lloyd Evans then had Sharp under pressure with a powerful shot before Letterston wasted a golden chance on the stroke of half time. Williams shot was palmed away by Griffiths, and Franklin saw his follow-up attempt cleared off the line.

Bancroft bangs in a   penalty

The second half started in the same vein as Letterston’s Mathias dragged a left foot shot wide when clean through before Williams lobbed an effort inches over the bar, But the tide turned on the hour mark after Bancroft headed a clear chance against the bar - but made amends minutes later as the striker went through on goal but was taken down by keeper Sharp, and referee Dean Boswell pointed to the spot,   dismissing the keeper's claims he touched the ball. Bancroft hammered the resulting penalty high into the net from 12 yards

Edwards’ effort wins it for Saints

On 68 minutes, Edwards settled the game when the central defender hit a hopeful ball forward just inside the opposition half. Sharp seemed to have the ball covered but lost track in the sun and it nestled in the net behind him. All the momentum was now with the Saints and Steve Trivett saw his shot blocked from close range. Letterston pressed forward late on but without ever seriously threatening an equaliser - and indeed it took a great save by Sharp from Saints’ substitute Aled Snelling to keep it at 2-1. But it mattered little as the Saints closed the game out and were able to celebrate a cup win.
