Back in 1992, former chairman, Tom Holmes regularly watched his son play for a local club. The manager did not seem to be up to much and Tom thought he could do better. So, he got together with Mike Carroll and started raising funds. They managed to raise £1000.00, which bought a portacabin. This became the base for the club and Miss Baker from Grosvenor Rd primary school let them use their school pitch for a small fee; as Tom also trained the school team. They started as Swinton Boys with one team. However, word got round and other children wanted to join in, thus creating Swinton Boys Football Club. In 2002, we eventually got a place to call our own SWINTON CRICKET CLUB(see 'How to find us'.) Although Tom's team had played from there for a few years, it was only when the Cricket Club disbanded that we had the opportunity to take over the running of the place as our own. This is an up hill struggle and requires lots of hard work from a group of dedicated individuals. We are currently in the process of restoring the facility to its former glory, as a sporting and social hot spot within the community, under the guidance of new chairman Richard Burke. Late in 2004 we had enough players to form a girls team. It was not easy, but we found a female coach and a secretary to run the team. As a result of the formation of this girls team, the club decided to replace the word BOYS with the word JUNIOR; therefore becoming Swinton Junior Football Club We now have 16 junior teams from u5's up to u17's and an open age football team will join the club as of the 2007/8 season. All teams are doing well in their respective leagues, all managers do a fantastic job, as do the committee members. All individuals give up their time freely to fulfil the many demanding roles within a football club. All work done by members, managers & committee is done voluntarily and the club relies heavily on fund raising. So please try to help and support in any way you can. After all its your club for your community. Thanks for your support
Should kids in the Under 11 age group continue to play small sided football (as in Scotland & Wales) or should they make the step up to 11-a-side (as in England)?
Small sided football - too early to move up
11-a-side football - time to step up
