Our Logo

The Animals experimented with a number of unofficial logos before a decision was made in early 2002 to commission an official one. Edward Warren MA, an advertising executive with Lowe International, was drafted in to help the Animals with their design.

Although some may say it just looks like the letter "A" tilted slightly to one side with the hole in the middle shifted to look like an eye, the official party line is that it represents a ferocious animal with gaping, sharply toothed jaws. Its sleek lines and minimalist countenance deliberately leave the question as to its species unanswered. It is not a lion, it is not a tiger, it is an Animal.

The Animals can trace their history back to the Ploughman Pub Team, formed in 1979 in Taipei, Taiwan. The Ploughman Pub played friendly matches on an occasional basis against other expatriate teams, notably the Over the Hill Gang and KLM. Local teams were rarely played against with the exception of the Ming Chuan Ladies team.

Highlights of this period were the trip to Manila in 1981 to play the Nomads and the return fixture in Taipei in 1982.

The opening of the Red Lion pub in Tien Mu led to a change of spiritual home and a change of name. Games were regular once-a-week affairs and occasional tournaments were organised.

In 1986, due to an ever increasing number of players and "artistic differences", the Animals split from the Red Lions. Both teams began playing regular matches against Chinese teams, and this led to the introduction of the Taipei Businessman's League in 1988.

The Taipei Animals have competed in this league ever since, with considerable success. We won the BML in 1989, 1991, 1993, and 1994, and were runners-up in 1992, 1997, and 2002.

We are the most successful team in the history of the quarterly-held All-Taiwan Foreigner's Cups: winning seven times, and runners-up four times. Our most recent victory was in the recent Fall Cup 2007, held in Kaohsiung early November.

The Animals have also competed in the Manila Six-a-Side tournament every year since 1989, winning 4 times and finishing runners-up 5 times (incl last year 2006).

In 2007 a big decision was made to withdraw from the BML to help support the growing and hopeful future of amateur football in Taipei by entering the Tavern Premier League (TPL). To date this mainly comprises of expat teams but over the coming years it aims to add more local teams for the benefit of all and importantly every team has a say, unlike the BML.
