History

1962-2009
11 Aug 2011

The Thurston Football Club was founded in 1962; the formation of the club was aided by Jack Baker and Mr P Howes.

The team played their first competitive matches on Saturdays in Division 4 of the Bury & District League. The team took the league by storm finishing runners up and reaching the final of the League Cup, taking the runners up medal in their first season.

In 1964, the Thurston reserve side was formed playing in the Saturday Village League.

Shortly after the Sunday Football League was formed in Bury St Edmunds and, Thurston FC entered a team.

Following several seasons the Thurston Football Club Saturday side found themselves short of players and unfortunately had to withdraw from the Bury & District League.

The Thurston FC side continued their football in the Bury St Edmunds Sunday League.

Saturday football returned to the village of Thurston shortly after, with the formation of a Youth side playing in the Bury Youth League.

This was to become the catalyst for the current Thurston Football Club set up, with the club joining Division 3 of the Suffolk & Ipswich League (SIL), thereby maintaining the careers of their aged youth players.

In their first three seasons in the SIL the Thurston side, the majority of them, having progressed from the Youth side, found themselves in Division 1, having won both Division 3 & 2 in consecutive seasons and finishing 3rd in their first season in Division 1.

During this period the Club's Youth set up has maintained the supply of players progressing through to the senior side.

Parkington stepped up from being reserves manager the previous season to be the new first team manager. Younger than all his squad but has some big ideas and ambitions for this talented side. Former manager Trevor Wright has come into Co-Manage the team. The new season awaits...

2010/11

Foreman stepped down as manager very early in the season and Thurston couldn't find anyone to fill the gap. Brett Gooch and Richard Sadler looked after the team whilst playing and did a great job. This season was a lot more difficult than the previous as Thurston lost some big players. After starting poorly, Thurston finished with some great performances and secured 10th spot which ended up being very safe from relegation.

2009/10

Terry Foreman took control of the club in July 2009. The 2009/10 season saw a fantastic league performance. Thurston found themselves pushing for promotion and then in March found themselves on top of the pile. The league was incredibly close between Thurston, Haughley and Stanton. It was the latter two that went up as Thurston conceded in the last minute of their final game to fall from 1st to 3rd and narrowly miss out on promotion due to goal difference. Foreman stepped down in August 2010
