Abacus v Bigshorts
Goal Post Abacus fall short at Timperley
From the Messenger Series, first published Friday 21st Feb 2003.
ABACUS travelled to Timperley Rec on Sunday in the Manchester Amateur Football League to face an unbeaten Bigshorts side who were looking to avenge last season's Cup Final defeat.
The game started brightly with both sides creating opportunities but Timperley seized the initiative when a near post corner was flicked on and headed home.
This served to fire up Abacus who for the rest of the half looked the more likely to score but it was not to be, despite some good chances being created.
The next goal of the game would always be decisive and it went the home side's way when Timperley's Feeney scored a superb individual goal.
Still Abacus didn't give up but still chances went begging and with 10 minutes left a Bigshorts third killed off any hopes of a comeback and the game finished 3-0 to the hosts.
Abacus chief Tony Henderson, while disappointed with the result, was happy with the commitment of his players in what was always going to be a difficult fixture against a strong Timperley side.
Abacus travel to Olympic Belgrade next Sunday where they'll be looking to regain their winning form.
