FORMER WOLVES STAR FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
Date: 12/11/06
Former Wolves player Ian ‘iggy’ Cartwright is fighting Cancer.

Ian signed for Wolves as a teenager and played between 1982 & 1986 making over 70 1st team appearances.

Ian was signed as apprentice to former manager John Barnwell.

Ian had also previously been schoolboy at West Bromwich Albion before being offered terms by Wolves.

Ian represented Wolves through a difficult period for the club, making his debut on his 18th birthday in November 1982 against Crystal Palace.

Ian scored on his home debut vs Middlesborough a week later in a 4-0 home win.

Ian also played under the wings of the likes of Tommy Docherty, Graham Hawkins,John Barnwell,Ian Greaves& Bill Mcgarry. His coaches have included Jim Barron,Brian Little & Sammy Chapman. He played in the 1982 team that won promotion to the old first division that year. His former team mates of that era included some Wolves greats namely John Richards, Kenny Hibbitt, Andy Gray, John Richards Geoff Palmer, Wayne Clarke and Mel Eves.

The following season Ian was in the team that beat the great Liverpool side of that period 1-0 at Anfield with Steve Mardenborough scoring his famous winning goal.

Ian who originates from Netherton and attended Hillcrest community college, has represented Dudley and Brierley Hill School boys, West Midlands county teams and had England school boy trials.

Ian’s two boys Matthew [12] & Danny[8 ]are both massive football fans and both play for Kewford Eagles, with young Danny showing tremendous early promise.

His Career was blighted with injuries, England under 21 call up prevented as a result of one. Eventually a serious ankle injury retired him from the professional game in 1986 aged 22.

Ian joined the prison force only to suffer a serious head injury, which forced him to retire.

Having previously been diagnosed with the Cancer in May 2005, Ian fought the illness to recover, until recently. Ian will fight the illness again with the support of Friends and Family.

Due to the type of Cancer his medical team have confirmed that it is possible to treat, however the medical cost of providing the treatment runs into thousands.Whilst Dudley Health Primary Care Trust deliberate on wether to spend the money on life saving treatment, friends and former players have set up a number of fund raising events in the aim to raise the £20,000 needed.

An old boys Wolves Vs West Bromwich Albion match has been organised with the likes of Tim Flowers and Cyrille Regis taking part.
