Royal Navy sides have played a part in local football since the early 1900’s and the Hampshire FA records are sprinkled with famous names such as HMS Victory, The Royal Navy Depot and HMS Fisgard. Portsmouth Royal Navy FC was formed in 1962 by Dennis Probee with the intention of providing competitive soccer at the highest level possible to bridge the gap between the United Services mid week league and the full Royal Representative Side. The club is affiliated to the Royal Navy Football Association.
PRNFC played in the Hampshire League from its formation until 1985/86 when the club became one of the seventeen founder members of the Wessex League. At that time the famous “Victory Stadium” at nearby Pitt Street was closed and the club relocated to the present Burnaby Road ground. This complex has gradually developed and now boasts the finest non-professional facilities in the area, including a 500 seated covered stand, 2 floodlit Astroturf pitches, electronic scoreboard and a new clubhouse. New changing facilities were constructed under the main stand during the 1995/96 season. 1997/98 season PRNFC Reserves entered the Jewson Wessex Combination League and finished in a very creditable 4th position.
Portsmouth Royal Navy FC most successful season in the Jewson Wessex League was 1996/97 when we achieved our highest league position of 10th. We have twice reached the semi final stage of the Jewson Wessex League Cup. In 1994/95 we lost by a single goal to AFC Lymington and then again in 1995/96, but went out this time to Wimborne Town.
During our stay the Hampshire League we have made several changes to the club, with the introduction of a Youth Section during season 2001/02 as one of the major changes. During Season 2003/04 we have further cemented the Youth Section with the introduction of a local Portsmouth Youth team, Meon Milton BFC, which is one of the largest in the Portsmouth Area, as a feeder club to Portsmouth Royal Navy FC.
The Hampshire Premier League proved to be a very competitive league for Portsmouth Royal Navy FC with our best finish being 6th in season 2003/04. Also during season 2003/04 Portsmouth Royal Navy achieved a very creditable Quarter-Final place in the prestigious Hampshire Senior Cup.
With the restructuring in the National League System coming to fruition at the start of season 2004/05 with one of the outcomes being the demise of the Hampshire League, Portsmouth Royal Navy with many other clubs were selected back into the Wessex League. With other changes occurring within the Armed Services we thought it prudent to change our name to United Services Portsmouth FC, in the hope that we can attract more personnel from the Army and the Royal Air Force who will now be based in the Portsmouth Area.
