Exeter University AFC History
31 Jan 2010

The current University of Exeter Football Club was founded in 1978 and is comprised of no fewer than six teams. The First Team play in the South West Peninsula League Division One East, whilst teams 2-5 compete in the Devon and Exeter League and the 6th Team take to the field in intra-mural football competitions on a Sunday morning.
Before the club’s foundation in 1978, they were previously known as St Luke’s College and had a very prosperous existence in the Devon and Exeter League, being Premier League champions seven times and competing alongside the likes of Tiverton Town, Dawlish Town and Cullompton Rangers before the club was wound up.
The current First Team continued this fine tradition as they too had a very successful stay in the Devon & Exeter League, winning the league championship on five occasions in 1979/80, 1980/81, 1997/98, 2000/01 and 2001/02 and were also runners-up three times in 1978/79, 1982/83 and 1996/97. The University Reserve Team still competes in the Devon and Exeter League Premier Division and were champions as recently as the 2007/08 season. ‘The Students’ left the Devon and Exeter League to join the Devon County League at the beginning of the 2002/03 campaign where they remained until joining the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League as a founder member in 2007.

The First Team have done themselves proud in the SWP League, having finished 6th out of 17 teams during the 2007/08 and 2008/09 campaigns and have also won the SWP League Sportsmanship Award for the past two seasons.
The 1st-4th teams also participate in the British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) inter-university competitions on Wednesday afternoons. The First Team, having secured consecutive promotions over the last two years, now play their football in the Premier South Division which means that they are ranked as one of the top 12 footballing universities in Great Britain.
