WANDERERS FC – CLUB HISTORY
Founded 1998. Founder Members: Scott Carrick (Chairman), Iain Saunderson (Treasurer), Sue Saunderson (Club Secretary and what a great job she does too, we’d have gone bust if she hadn’t been with us).
The team initially formed in 1998 when a few local Trowbridge lads played footy at Stallards park on a Thursday night (jumpers for goal posts), until someone had the great idea to start up a team. After months of practicing the long ball technique and actually passing to each other and learning to head the ball we joined the Devizes league in 1999.
After a string of poor defeats never bowing our heads, confidence started to grow and the team began to gel with some amazing performances notably against Selectabook (basically Devizes FC). We did finish last, but hey you can only get better.
After a few years of plying our trade and building up our knowledge we left the Devizes league in 2004 when the league disbanded. Over the few years we were in the Devizes League, teams became less and less and disembarked to join the Chippenham & District League, so we too decided to give this a go.
Our first season 2004 – 2005 was not too bad, playing better teams and on a regular basis, we did ourselves proud finishing 7th in Division 4.
We have played on various pitches as our home ground which is why we have called ourselves Wanderers FC, as we will play anywhere that is available, due to our passion for the game. To name just a few Cherry Lane (Westbury), the Skate Board Ramp Park (Westbury), Christie Miller (Melksham), Green Lane (Devizes), Leighton (Westbury) and lastly at our new home at Southwick Sports and Social ground (Southwick, Nr Trowbridge), which has great facilities including a bar!
Only 3 members of the original team remain, Scott ‘The Cat’ Carrick, Iain ‘Veteran’ Saunderson and Nick ‘Coley’ Tate.
We have some new exciting players this season recruited by Matty Ruslin and the skipper this year is Ollie Turner. We are hoping to surprise a few teams this season.
Promotion is our aim, attractive football is our game.
