MALDON ST MARY'S F.C.

Formerly named Three Cups FC who formed in 2002 and played in The Mid-Essex league division 3. Promotion was acheived in successive seasons after Goodchild was appointed manager by Clark. The club name was changed following a new sponsorship deal with The Welcome PH in the summer of 2005. Promotion to the Premier division in the mid-essex league followed along with League Cup and Charity Cup success at the end of a tough 06/07 campaign.
After The Welcome shut down early in 2007 a new opportunity arose to use a team name that no longer represented a pub. Maldon St Mary's FC formed and took there bow in the Mid-Essex Premier Division eventually finishing 3rd. The final league position was enough to allow Maldon to once again step up a level to the ESSEX OLYMPIAN LEAGUE. It was there 4th league climb in 6 years. With new sponsorships secured along with better facilities and a fresh talented squad the futures bright, the futures orange!

HISTORY OF MALDON ST MARY'S F.C.

Maldon st Mary's F.C. were formed by Reverend Thomas Wilfred Ward(MA) in 1894. He was vicar of St Mary's church in Maldon and formed the team to get youngsters off the streets. At that time many ships were entering the Hy-the regularly looking for cheap labourers. After a number of years not playing any serious football, but meeting regularly to have a kick-about, The team joined The Mid-Essex Football Leagues lowest division. It played up to the 1st World War where it was seen as an on/off club until a man called Brian Law took control in the late 50's. After several years keeping the club afloat but with little success, Brian handed the reigns to Tom Goodrick in 1958, who run the club single handily. His roles ranging from kit-washer to Manager to Chairman and it was through his perseverance the club was about to embark on its most successful era. Before passing away in 1972 at the age of 82 Tom had handed the job to Brian Lloyd. A man that was to be a big member of the club for many years. Brian had little success whilst in charge of the team and through a chance meeting invited former Tottenham, Juventus and Torino player Tony Marchi to help out every now and then. Tony had just been sacked by Heybridge Swifts and upon hearing of his new managerial role was soon to be joined by over half of Swifts first team squad. Whilst in charge it is believed Tony did not miss a single game as manager even though he was just going to help out!
Playing the early years on Maldons Promenade and eventually switching to King George IV Playing field in Heybridge. The team played a majority of its time in white tops, black shorts and red socks. After finding there way to division 2 in the mid-essex league they went straight up to the premier league in consecutive seasons before winning it in 75/76 and 76/77. Cup success came in 74/75 in the form of the league cup. Also on the agenda was the essex junior cup where they reached two finals. In 75/76 they lost to Beechfield Sports at Grays Athletics stadium and the following season they lost once more to Brentwood. Other honors at the time included the North Essex Cup, Suffolk and Border Cup, Chelmsford Charity Cup, Burnham Charity Cup and D'Arcy Charity Cup which they won beating Heybridge Swifts 2-0 in the final. There proudest day to date!
Due to a sheer number of players a reserve side was also set up in 73/74 and they had just as much success. Going from div 6 to div 1 in successive years which is where they remained due to the first team being in the league above.

Tony resigned as manager in the mid 80's as the teams success diminished and the influx of talented players dried up. In the 89/90 season under a new unknown management duo the club left the mid-essex league and joined the intermediate league as founder members of division 3. Somewhat a surprise to past members who could now see the club beginning to struggle in the wrong hands. In the 92/93 season the clubs existence was finally at an end. With a lack of players wanting to join the new regime it folded in 92/93.
No more was heard of the team or its great past until now where it has been reformed with help from past committee members and playing personnel to hopefully bring back days of old and the trophies they had won.
