Welland Valley Football Club was founded in 1998 by David Joyner and Tom Carr. The club started with one team at U8 and one at U9, both playing in the Nursery 7's Milton Keynes League.
A year later there were four teams and all registered with Northampton’s John Henry League. Tom Carr became the club chairman and, thanks to his contacts, got sponsorship from Harrison Murray estate agents.
That arrangement led to the club colours you see today. At first, teams started playing in predominantly white shirts with bits of blue and yellow. But with the sponsorship deal they changed their kit to reflect the colours of the Harrison Murray logo – navy blue, yellow and white.
The club has gone from strength to strength and we now field teams in all the age groups from U7 up to U14.
In 2002, we secured our own ground in conjunction with Northampton Borough Council. Located at Wootton Brook in Ladybridge Drive, West Hunsbury, our ground has four youth pitches and three mini-soccer pitches and lies at the heart of the community.
2003 saw our inaugural summer tournament, with teams competing for the Harrison Murray Cup. This event has grown to be one of the highlights of the youth football calendar and now attracts 56 teams and a total of over 700 young players.
Mick Watts succeeded Tom Carr as chairman in 2006. He is ably supported by a dedicated team. Thanks to the hard work of Mick and the other committee members, Welland Valley achieved F.A. Charter Standard Club Status in August 2009.
The club continues to go from strength to strength, adding a new U7 team at the start of every season, encouraging players of all abilities to develop their talent and achieve their true potential.
