A Brief History... (29/08/07)

Our club was formed in 1898, but it was not until 1929 that the name WENHASTON UNITED FC was settled upon. Prior to that, we were known as Wenhaston Rovers, Wenhaston Old Boys, Wenhaston & Blyford United and Wenhaston Wesley Guild.

After playing in a variety of district leagues, and later the Lowestoft League, the First Team joined the Suffolk and Ipswich League in 1975. This first season in the SIL saw Wenhaston United finish as winners of Division 2 gaining promotion to Division 1. Since then, the First Team has seen a form of a ‘yo-yo’ effect, as relegations from Division 1 have slighted overshadowed the promotions to that stage in 1987, 1991 and 1997.

However, 1995 saw the greatest achievement by Wenhaston in recent years as the First Team lifted the Suffolk Junior Cup, under the management of Dougie Canham, who is now Chairman of the club. The 2 goal hero from that day, Peter Varley, went on to star for Tiverton Town and 3 years later scored the winner for them in the FA Vase Final at Wembley.

The Reserves transferred to the SIL from the Lowestoft League in 1991. They finished 5th in Intermediate B in their first season. Since then, their fortunes and level of playing have largely depended on the First Teams status. They did, however, record their best season in 1997/98, as they reached promotion to Intermediate A under the guidance of Alan Curtis.

The 2006/07 Season saw the Reserves reach their first ever Cup Final, the Harpers Intersport Cup Final against Bramford Road Old Boys Reserves, where they cruelly lost on Penalties following a gruelling 0-0 draw after extra time.

The Reserves previous cup run of note was in 2001/02, as they reached the Semi-Finals of the Primary Cup. They were beaten by AFC Hoxne in a replay after an earlier game was abandoned due to injury.

Off the pitch, our Pavillion was completed in 1988 following a decade of hard work and fundraising. Its interior is continually improved and updated to stay in keeping with todays requirements. Our set up at Wenhaston, both our Pavillion and our hard working committee, is a credit to the club and are the envy of many a side at this level.
