West Cornwall met Illogan RBL Reserves in the final of the Percy Stephens Cup at Helston’s Kellaway Park on a Sunny Sunday afternoon; the game had a lot to live up to with both sides merited for attractive flowing football and it eclipsed the predictions.
West Cornwall took the lead on 6 minutes when Robbie Condie was slipped through by Owain Barrett and he calmly slid the ball passed the on-rushing keeper, West Cornwall pressed home the advantage against their stunned opponents when, with pressure from Simon Jefferies, the Illogan keeper failed to claim a cross and the ball crept over the line, the linesman awarding the goal. This sparked Illogan into life and their aerial threat began to cause West Cornwall problems, set piece after set piece led to Illogan scrambling in two quick goals to draw the game level. The game now settled in to a rhythm, Illogan playing balls into the box from wide areas and West Cornwall looking to counter attack with the pace of Sam Kevern, and the three amigos behind him, Barrett, Jefferies and Condie. Both teams looked threatening and both teams looked to exploit the weaknesses of the opponent. Half time came with no addition to the score line 2 -2, have a breather!
The second half began with Illogan on the front foot, they took the lead with another ball into the box not dealt with by the West Cornwall defence, Steve Gilbert knocking one of the line but the follow up sneaked into the corner of the goal, 3 – 2, could West Cornwall come back? A shuffle of the front 4 saw Barrett push through the middle and it was he that broke 1 v 1 against the Illogan centre back who could do nothing but bring Barrett down 25 yards from goal, Barrett stepped up and curled a great free kick passed the wall and with the keeper waiting for a deflection the ball carried on into the bottom corner unaided 3 – 3. With 10 minutes remaining West Cornwall took the lead, captain marvel Steve Gilbert rose at the back post to head in, 4 – 3 but there was to be one more twist, with 40 seconds to go Illogan grabbed an equaliser, a near post header finding its way into the back of the net, here we go… extra time!
Extra time was fairly uneventful with neither team wanting to lose out, Gary Stephens making a smart save from close range to deny Illogan.
So this was to be settled by the lottery of penalties! Illogan start the shoot-out with a goal, West Cornwall start off with Owain Barrett slotting in, Illogan net their second as well, Ben Penberthy converted West Cornwall’s second, 2 -2 , Illogan made it 3 – 2, Toby Ellis kept West Cornwall hot on the heels 3 -3. Time for a hero, Gary Stephens, the West Cornwall keeper blocks the fourth Illogan penalty, deflecting it on to the bar, Ryan Cooper makes it 3 – 4 West Cornwall, the final Illogan penalty is smashed over the bar… Cue the most hysterical scenes as West Cornwall are crowned Percy Stephens Winners 2012/13.
