| Westdyke Community Club - Boys 15's | 2 |
| FDS | 1 |
For the second season in succession we welcomed FDS to Lawsondale for our final league game of the season. It was again played in very blustery conditions.
1st Half - Westdyke kicked off facing the stiff breeze and were immediately on the offensive with a good run and cross by Keiran which was cleared. Westdyke were playing the better football at this point as they needed to keep the ball on the ground. Another good run by Keiran saw him win a corner. Ryan Sp swung it in and a snap shot by Gregor was charged down before being cleared. The pressure finally paid off when Westdyke took the lead when an incisive pass by Gregor split the FDS defence allowing Matty to drive goal wards. MATTY drew the keeper and then knocked it past him into the net for a super goal (1-0). At the other end a free kick from FDS was placed just over the bar and they equalised when a ball over the top was not dealt with by the Westdyke defence and the striker took the opportunity to blast into the top corner for an excellent finish (1-1). Jason replaced Logan who was feeling unwell around this point. Another FDS shot from distance was wide as Westdyke battled the wind and worked hard in the midfield. Another good run by Matty saw Craig's shot saved and then Keiran had a chance at the back post but he put it wide.
2nd Half - Westdyke turned with the wind at their back for the second half and set about the FDS defence. A great run by Keiran following a through ball from Gregor saw him burst into the box but his shot was high and wide. A good ball by Dylan found Matty who laid it off to Ryan Sp whose first time shot whistled past the post as the pressure mounted. At the other end, Charlie watched a shot go wide but the back 4 and midfield were working hard to prevent any real scoring opportunities for the away side. A couple of corner kicks were well defended as FDS pushed on for a goal themselves. Ross, Fraser and Elliot all joined the fray at this point as fresh legs were rotated and a goal was scored when Elliot latched onto a through ball and showed great strength as he drove into the box. Just as he was about to pull the trigger, Elliot was brought down and the referee awarded a penalty kick. GREGOR stepped up to slot the ball home (2-1). Moments later and it could have been 3 when Craig did well to side step his marker and square to Elliot inside the box. However his shot was too straight at the keeper and the save was made. Westdyke saw out the remaining minutes of the game.
Final score 2-1
In summary, another good game of football from both sets of players in difficult conditions. Both teams played the conditions very well in a tight contest. We wish Simon, Steve and the FDS lads the best of luck in the cup final and thank the referee who managed the game well.
Finally the coaches would just like to thank the lads for their efforts over the season. Especially the spell of matches since we returned from Dublin, the workrate and desire has been second to none and this has been borne out with the results. Well done lads!
