WHULFC Officers Reports AGM 15th May 2007
CHAIRMANS REPORT
When I stood for the post of chairman last year it was with the intention of raising our profile and also creating a closer working relationship with West Ham United.
Asking Tony Fowles to be our official press officer has proved to be a very good decision and certainly given us greater exposure right across the county, including a regular feature in The Hammers News. Tony has also transformed our match day programme into a club magazine which is the envy of all who play us.
Through Tony’s links at the WHU Academy our coaches have started attending the training sessions at Chadwell Heath gaining invaluable coaching tips from the professionals.
We are also starting to have regular friendlies against Centre of excellence sides which I am sure will start to pay dividends soon.
John Greenacre, Tony Marshall and I recently had a very encouraging meeting with Mr Eggert Magnusson and although we have nothing as yet to announce, he assured us of his willingness to help and stressed the point that the new management would be completely different to his predecessors.
Our senior teams have had a season of highs and lows. Kay Cossington regrettably stood down as First Team Manager citing pressure of work.
Andi Woodly continued as assistant holding the fort until Sam Thompson was appointed as 1st team manager taking us on our longest ever run in the League Cup, all the way to the ¼ Finals and securing our place in The Premier Division South for a second successive season.
Sam has decided to stand down this season so I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sam for all her hard work and wish her the very best for the Future.
Steve Coombs took over the Reserves this season and started with a baptism of fire playing Arsenal, Watford and a team from Japan in a pre-season tournament that the 1st team were unable to attend. We finished 4th but it was a great experience for our squad to compete against so many International players.
Angela Murphy hung up her boots this season and took charge of the U11’s for her first foray into Management. Without a regular goal keeper they finished runner-up and were only knocked out of the cup by the league winners. A brilliant performance. They will be playing senrab again on Sunday in the final of the plate competition at Flanders kick-off 10.30 so good luck girls.
Julie proved that last season was not a case of beginners luck with the U12’s winning the league again. Unfortunately they came up against a very resilient team in the final and were only just beaten 4 – 2.
Due to work commitments Julie will be stepping down for a few months until she settles into her new job, but we are all hoping this will be just a short break. Good Luck!!
Ray moved up to U14’s with his squad and again won the league drawing only 1 game all season to Redbridge whom they faced in the cup final coming out victorious winning 4 - 2
Our U16’s continued their 2 year unbeaten league and cup run conceding only 4 goals in both competitions. They faced Brentwood in the cup final winning 7 - 0 in what was their last game as a team together. It will be good to see how they get on in the seniors as and when they come of age.
Our U14 and 16’s have also had our best ever representation for The Essex county teams, providing 9 girls in both age groups underlining our dominance at junior level.
The seniors were not to be outdone having a similar number representing the county as well.
I would like to thank everyone who has helped to make this, such a memorable season and hope you all have an enjoyable summer break.

Secretary’s Report
Well that has to be one of my toughest years in over 30 years of service to the West Ham Ladies cause. It has also in some respects been one of the most fruitful.
Tough in as much that the senior team, who have never tasted relegation, were sweating over the last 3 weeks awaiting their fate, which was not in our hands.
Kay decided to step down as Team Manager early in the campaign & Sam stepped in to fill the breach, but never really got the support of the players. Andie Woodley [founder member] stood down as assistant manager late in the season, also due to the lack of support from the players.
The Reserves under Steve also struggled at first, but finished strongly
We created a new record of having over 50 players actually playing for us in both the 1st & Reserves. Hardly the recipe for playing a settled side.
We suffered 2 very serious injuries to key players, Claire & Vicky B.
We also had 3 of our members lose their Dad’s, and our thoughts are still with Sam P, Faye B, & Megan J and their family’s.
On the bright side, all the junior teams have excelled, winning most of their games comfortably, we also got encouraging signs when stepping up a level to play Academy teams and visiting teams from Finland & Norway.
We had a successful day at the Junior Cup Finals and I would like to thank all the parents for attending this & the matches throughout the season.
My thanks also to the senior player who showed her support for the juniors at the Finals.
My undying thanks go to my match secretary’s, Andie Woodley, Liam Crowe, Ann Chapman, Jane Wood, Julie Hollingsworth & Angela Murphy without who I could not function. [extra work for you lot next year as I’m off on an extended holiday]
Two men have taken this club onto the next playing field are Liam Crowe & Tony Marshall, both have been instrumental on setting up links with Barking Abbey Academy, a USA Academy and most important a direct link with our parent club. West Ham Utd.
We have had a meeting with Mr Magnusson and another is arranged for the 22nd May. We are hopeful this new link will be a significant step for the Ladies club.
Remember; All current members need to attend the open day on the 3rd June.
As I mentioned earlier I am off on extended holiday [whole of July including trip to Oslo with u16] then coaching in the USA for all of August, then a short break in Canada in early September, and another break in October in Majorca to recharge my battery’s.
So I need help… Website… registrations… press… meetings… general dogsbody stuff…
Please email me on johngreenacre@btopenworld.com if you can help.

Treasurer Report
Although starting with a deficient we have managed to close the season with healthy bank balance, although we cannot afford at the moment to relax. We need new kits next season which could come to £15k and the cost of the training pitch at Beckton is set to rise.
At present the committee is in dialogue with W.H.U. re assisting us in certain area's.
The Fund raising column includes £832 paid to the Bobby Moore fund.
I am proposing to the Management Committee to implement a few changes next season.
a] A £10 registration Fee will be paid by every player before their Club Registration can be accepted.
b] £10 per 4 week period will be paid in advance of receiving Pre-season Training.
c] The £25 monthly fee will start on the 1st Aug for Seniors & the 1st Sept for Juniors.
We may if talks with W.H.U. are fruitful, be able to reassess the fees at a later date.
My thanks to Karol O’Brien, Ron Busby, Jo Ottley, Angie Murphy for collecting the junior subs. I only wish the senior team subs collector was half as good as those people. [that’s me in case you did not know]

Reserve Team
It was a season of many changes for the reserves but in the right direction for West Ham Ladies. The average of the team was brought down to just 17 (at times playing 5 fifteen year olds), we provided 3 players who had involvement in the first team setup and now have a good base for the future players coming through the junior ranks of the club. From the side that started the first game of the season only 3 players started the last game which shows the amount of change that occurred but in that last game we lost 2-1 away at second placed Barnet, hitting in the bar in the last minute, the following week league champions Millwall went there and drew 1-1. Although the job is nowhere near complete the team is now at a stage where we can look to push for a top half finish next season and more importantly provide a solid team to support the first team.
I took over the roll quite late and did not have a lot of time to assess or work with the squad before the season kicked off. Early results were frankly embarrassing as we worked hard to turn things around without much luck. However over time as new players came in, younger players grew in confidence and we started to bond as a team, results improved and points started to come. It showed the strength of the squad when at times I had to leave up to 8 players out of the match day squad due to numbers. There were also times when we weakened by losing players but for the right reasons as they went on the help the first team squad which was a good sign. At the end of the season we had pushed ourselves into a position just below the middle pack and were disappointed when we found out Wimbledon had withdrawn, after we beat them twice, leaving us back at the bottom.
Overall I enjoyed my first season coaching in senior football and hope the girls did to. I hope we can now go on to improve on this season and provide the support and players for the first team that a reserve team should. I would like to thank Ang, John, Andi and Liam who have all been a big help over the season.
Steve
U16 Manager
Essex County Girls League, League Champions and League Cup Winners
Well this season a culmination and combination of the last 3 years work by Steve Coombs and myself.
Played 15 won 15 what can we say we need to be in the academy league !!!
Goals for 171 against 4 GD + 167 says it all
The overwhelming positive is not the victory but the quality of football and the manner in which the girls have conducted themselves. Anyone who has seen the girls in action this year has done nothing but compliment the way in which the girls have got the ball down and passed it around and been brilliant ambassadors for the club.
(Quote from Bishops Stortford Manager in front of their players and parents “ your girls to day have shown us what level we have to aspire too and the way they have conducted them selves is a credit to themselves and the club”
8 girls have reached double figures in the goal stakes which again demonstrates the ability of the team. They are a highly intelligent and motivated group of players who have adapted to different systems and styles of play without any problem. The great majority have been training with the seniors nearly all season and this has benefited them enormously and I must say they have not looked out of place.
The big pluses have been not only playing and beating a couple of womens sides but beating Charltons U-16’s development squad and losing narrowly to Arsenal.
9 of the girls have been ever presents for the Essex Schools U-16 all playing a year above their age and tonight are playing in the South East of England Final against Kent.
We have also reached the U-16 National 5 a-side finals in Manchester on June 16th
I would like to thank Karol O’Brien our treasurer for not only keeping our finances on track but also organising our entry into a week long major international tournament in Norway in July.
Anne Chapman for organising the fixtures and doing the thankless paperwork and John Colley our match reporter and the mums and dads who have helped make the tea put the nets up and get there girls there on time – priceless.
Mr Greenacre for basically everything and Tony Fowles for being the sides No1 Fan and global head of PR
Regards
Tony Marshall
U12 Manager
You only need to look at the WHU U12 Fixtures and Results, and Goal Tally (103 goals excluding friendlies) 2006-2007, to see that we have had been a successful squad this season.
From the start, players previously signed with WHU: Ruby Baxter, Erin Boreham, Naomi Hayes, Karla Joseph, Emma Kelleher, Dannielle Robertson and Abbie Simmonds welcomed new players and used their experience to support others. New signings to WHU: Alex Baker, Faye Cook, Leigh Houlihan, Gemma Hyland, Lillie Kershaw, Chloe Wakeham and Danielle Belcher have from the start showed the commitment and attitude needed to be part of WHU, fitting in well and strengthening the squad as a whole.
Success this season has not only come from our footballing strengths, we know that we have attempted to ‘play good football’ throughout, but also from our mind set. We have developed as leaders, showed versatility in playing different positions and formations, been prepared to learn and shown sportsmanship to opponents, especially ones that have not been as strong as us on match days! As a result, we are respected by our opponents and are seen as a team that other sides aspire to be like.
Another factor for our success must come from the support and encouragement given by families and friends. Special thanks to Jo for all her hard work as U12 treasurer, Jim for reffing our games, all parents and family that have washed kit, helped on match days with nets and cones, taken players to and from training / matches, supported and encouraged us!! Also, to John G for encouraging us and sorting ‘things’ out, Tony F for taking loads of photos & working hard to get our reports in the papers etc, Alex for reffing games and all the other coaches and managers that have supported us.
WHU U12 have achieved this season the titles of: Southern League Champions, Cup Runners Up and Newham 5 a ‘side winners. In fact, until the u12 cup final the squad have been unbeaten all season. Players should be proud of themselves for this and I hope that they keep their interest and enthusiasm in football for a long time to come, irrespective of the team they play for, and continue to aim to be the best that they can be. Well done and good luck for next season and the future!
Julie Hollingsworth
U11 Manager
My First Season as Under 11 Coach has been extremely enjoyable and rewarding. When I first took charge I wondered whether I would miss playing but I have enjoyed every minute.
This is due to the fantastic squad of players that I have had the pleasure of coaching.
I feel that ultimately this has been a very successful first season for the girls. Coming Runners up in the league and winning 15 out of the 18 games that we have played, Playing some excellent football along the way and showing a team spirit and passion for the game that I have found inspiring. The most important thing for me is the fact that the girls have all enjoyed their football and have shown a great improvement over the season.
We also still have the Plate final to look forward to this coming Sunday (Flanders 10.30am kick off, if anyone’s interested!!!!)
Thanks must go to all those who have helped myself and the girls this season.
Thanks to Tony Fowles for covering the majority of our games this season and finally succeeding in getting the girls to run towards the camera when they score!!!
Julie for helping out with the girls and training.
And special thanks to John who has helped out on so many occasions I’ve lost count.
