The club were originally the football section of the Bournemouth YMCA, who had been members of the Bournemouth League since the 1920's. After many years in Bournemouth Junior and Dorset Youth football without any success, they won Division 4 in 1979, and then achieved promotion to Division 2 at the first attempt, they were also beaten finalists in the Hampshire Junior 'A' Cup in the same season, losing 1-0, to the then Southampton Junior League Champions, Colden Common F.C.
The Team comfortably held their own in Division 2, with a highest league finish of 4th in 1984, however in 1985, due to the membership rules, which it was felt was restricting the progress of the Team, the football section decided to split from the YMCA and renamed themselves Westover Bournemouth F.C. (The YMCA is in Westover Road and the Club's regular drinking hole was the nearby Westover Inn).
The Club based its self at Kings Park in Boscombe, prior to this the Club had led a nomadic existence, playing on various Bournemouth Parks pitches.
The decision was soon vindicated, as in 1987 the Club finished as runners-up in Division 2, and achieved Division 1 status for the first time. They quickly established themselves as a force by
finishing third in the League and reaching the first of their eight Pickford Cup Finals. In the same season the Club secured sponsorship from local car dealers Westover Motors and played as Westover Motors Bournemouth F.C. for the next six years.
A first Pickford Cup win in 1989 was followed in 1990 by the first of the Club's record eight League Championships. Another Pickford Cup win, and runners-up spot in the League in 1992 preceded a dominating period for the Club, with three successive League Championships between 1993-1995. This along with two losing Bournemouth Senior Cup Final appearances and a third Pickford Cup win confirmed Westover as the top Club in Bournemouth football.
The Club however received major shock the following season, being relegated on goal difference, but a rebuilt Team bounced back as Division 2 Champions and Pickford Cup winners the next season.
Westover continued to strengthen their side over the next few years, and were League runners-up in 1999 and 2000. That year also saw Westover Bournemouth win a fifth Pickford Cup, and become the first Bournemouth League club in twenty-six years to win the prestigious Hampshire Intermediate Cup, beating the Southampton Senior League Champions Brendan F.C. 3-2 after a replay. A feat they repeated in 2003, this time defeating Wessex Combination side Horndean Reserves 2-0 in the Final.
This period proved to be the most successful in the Club's history, winning a record four successive League Championships between 2001 and 2004, as well as the Bournemouth Champions Cup twice in 2001 and 2002. The Club were also losing finalists in the Bournemouth Senior Cup in 2002, and the Pickford Cup in 2004. Over these two seasons, the Team set a new Club record, between April 2001 and March 2003, of thirty-six League games without defeat.
The 2005 season finished with the Club just being pipped for the League title, and the following year a forth Bournemouth Senior Cup final appearance again saw the Club fail to win the only trophy that has eluded them. But since then the Club has had a lean spell, by their own standards, flirting with relegation for the last two seasons.
However the Club's Reserve and 'A' Teams, have both had their success's over the years, with the Reserves winning Division 3 and the Page-Croft Cup in 2001, and the 'A' Team winning Division 5 in 2002, and finishing as Division 4 runners-up in 2007, as well as victories in the Hayward Cup in 1993 and the Page-Croft Cup in 2005.
