The first league game of 2008 saw Wigan take their 100% unbeaten record on the road for the match against Lancaster City. The return fixture at the Giant Axe Stadium was to prove a different proposition from the corresponding match at the JJB, with a much improved Lancaster side on show.
With keeper Sam out through injury and skipper Heather absent, a squad of only 11 made the trip up the M6.
Stand in captain Lauren won the toss and chose to play against the Force 9 gale in the first half. Not one of Lauren's better decisions as it turned out !
Andy and Dave took an instant liking to the double glazed dug out, but had to vacate come kick off time.
The howling gale reduced the game to a farce at times and it was no surprise that the home side spent long spells in the Wigan half, taking full advantage of the conditions.
Katie Mac was an able stand- in between the posts and spread confidence throughout the defence. Chances were few and far between and the 0-0 half time scoreline was a moral victory to Wigan.
The half time team talk focused on using the advantage of the strong wind, however, as the teams emerged the wind had dropped, and with it the advantage.
Attacking from the off, Wigan struck early in the second half. From a corner on the left debutante Lynne prodded in from close range (Kuyt special) with the home defence in some confusion. The lead was soon doubled with a similar close range effort from Emily.
Rather than kicking on it was the home side who finished the stronger and scored with 10 mins left on the clock. Despite some late pressure Wigan held on to record an eighth successive league win.
The empty bench meant the girls had to work hard and one or two picked up minor knocks.
All in all a good win. Full credit to Katie in goal. A good back four display from Chopper, Hannah, Helen and GoM Thommo. Midfield did well with Emily (1), Jenny, Lyndsey, Lauren and Lynne (1) all working hard, as did Billy up front leading the line.
