Coming off the back of a good victory last week keeping a clean sheet, confidence was in the squad. All set to name an un-changed starting 11 problems occurred, with Chimpy still P****D and Craig unable to complete the warm up after a knock the day before, it was a bad start.
We lined up
Neil
Matt, Toby S, Russ, Mike
Tom, Greg, Toby F (C), Mike
Robin, Herbie
With Rich, Chris and Chimp waiting in the wings.
It was an open game from the first whistle and after seeing thier keeper warm up (a regular CM) a shoot on site policy was inforced, unfortunately shots were wayward.
Up against a team that were fairly tall and battling for everything in the air we needed to keep it on the deck with crisp passing, easier said than done on the charlie lu pitches although it was better than normal.
We opened the scoring fairly early when Greg and Toby F exchanged a neat 1-2 befor Ben slid in Robin to drill it in from the edge of the area 1-0. We continued to play good football but were caught not pushing up as a back 4 allowing thier striker to nip in and slot home 1-1. This pumped up the Islanders and we had to battle to establish control again. A speculative effort from Toby F fully 30 yds out curled and bounced on the 6 yd line before rattling the post and nestling in the goal, with the keeper leaving it as a wide shot 2-1. We continued to press and had the better of the play but a ball over the top and a clever bending run to stay onside from thier striker brought Neil out to smother, but he got a toe to it just before and Neil clattered into him, penalty and thankfully only a yellow was shown. Despite the dancing keeper the kick was down the centre 2-2. We kicked off and were straight on the attack no more than 4 passes were made before Herbie scored retaking the lead 3-2.
In what was a busy first half Rootsy 'scored' goal of the season taking down a ball from Matt on his chest in full flight and vollying home, unfortunately the ref saw it is a handball. Syco sincas also picked up a yellow for crafty use of his elbow, well spotted by the ref. Also after some fairly even play we broke with Herbie finding himself with the attention of the two CBs and 'ronaldosesque' flick put Robin in for his second 4-2.
HALF TIME 4-2 we were good going foward but made 2 mistakes at the back. The GKs kicks were not travelling far enough for Toby S and Russ to come and win and although Greg and Toby F were battleing and winning some the fact that they were 6 inches shorter than thier CM was a factor.
Tom got a kick on the ankle just before half time and couldnt continue, Chris came to RB and Matt pushed on.
The game continued as it left off with it being end to end and fairly open. We still tried to keep the ball on the floor but it seemed not as much as the first half. The Islanders drew first blood and after a bit of a goal mouth scramble a shot was blocked by Chris's arm and another penalty was awarded. Neil had another dance routine lined up to impress the crowd but the pen was hit hard and he got a finger to it but it bounced in off the bar 4-3. Islanders had a golden opportunity to level it up after a mistake at CB thier striker rounded Neil who had come 'off limits' but then very slowly managed to stumble over with the ball rolling wide.
Our reaction was good and we picked it up, Greg had energy to burn as he popped up every where and with a bursting run from CM managed to slide in infront of thier keeper to score a deserved goal 5-3. Not happy at one he made a similar run this time picking his spot to slot home 6-3. Chimpy came on for Conks to add a bit of pace at LB, all we needed to do was to see it out but the Islanders gamely kept on coming and managed to get a fourth goal 6-4.
Full Time WOB F.C 6 - 4 Stone Island. In a game where we looked dangerous going foward we looked equally as vunarable at the back, 2 of the goals conceded were mistakes and it could of been worse, With our return match v St Edmunds next week we need to cut out the defensive errors that will cost us.
REF WATCH: Over saw a game with two teams playing football, not interested in abusing or hurting each other just playing football he was consistant on decision making with no surprises, no arguements with either cautions
