Woolsery became champions after securing a win against clovelly at home with the score being 5 - 0. The following saturday was another home game this time our opponents were Merton and after the game the trophy was handed to our captain Matt Lewis and vice captain Jamie Robertson. Woolsery ended up with a total of 66 points after achieving 21 wins from a possible 26, with 3 draws and only 2 defeats. It was a great season with the squad not only winning the league but also the league cup and baileys intermediate cup.
Woolsery won the Arlington Cup beating Park Utd at Bideford Sports ground on the 17th April after Luis Wilkins strike in extra time.
The game was lively from the first whistle to the last with both sides looking threatening throughout. The scores were level at half time as Park missed a great chance to go one nil up.
the second half was much the same as the first but with 20 mins to go Paul Mills looped the ball back into the danger zone only for the ball to hit the bar. It then fell to Nick Glover who side footed the ball into the net as Woolsery went a goal up.
this lasted only a few minutes as Park got straight back into the game with a goal from Kevin Buck. As the ball came in from the corner Buck rose well and powerfully headed the ball into the top corner.
The 90 mins were soon up and extra time was needed to give us a winner. players were getting cramp, in particular Paul Mills who got it in both legs. The pace of the game was still at a high tempo as both teams were fighting to win the game. The first half was soon up and the players got more fluids in and quickly turned round for the restart. As the clocked ticked on the players were getting more anxious, and in the back of their minds thinking about penalties, Luis Wilkins wasn't as he got the ball from the edge of the 18 yard box took it past one player and struck the ball low and hard into the bottom corner.
Every Woolsery player went mental as they celebrated the goal. The fans were going ballistic on the sidelines and the cup was now in sight.
There was just 5 more minutes to go before the cup was ours. Park tried to push as many men forward as possible, trying to get that goal. The clock seemed to have stopped with woolserys hearts beating that much faster. Everytime a Woolsery player got the ball it was getting pumped up the pitch.
And then...
the final whistle, surely....
no the woolsery players thought the whistle had gone but it was just to say it was a throw in. Park players were rushing even more, one last throw of the dice. Again the ball got played back to Park and again the ball was played down field.
Then finally the whistle blew, Woolsery had gone back a year later and picked up the trophy as they became champions of the Arlington cup.
