ABOUT THE CLUB

Tommy Casssidy has been awarded the Manager of the Month title for March in Conference North. The month saw Reds go unbeaten and reach the Cumberland Senior County Cup Final. Well done Tommy.

The Reds have signed 20 year old left back, Gari Rowntree from Blackburn Rovers. Gari played in the Reserves 2-0 victory over Barrow at borough Park on Tuesday night and gave an impressive account of himself. He joins a select club of players currently at Reds whose fathers have played for the club in the past. His father Kevin was a no nonsence forward who played for the Reds during two spells in the 80's and 90's serving managers including Mick Heaton and Wayne Harrison.

Carlisle United have joined Reds in the County Cup Final after beating Wetheriggs 5-0 at Brunton Park. The venue and date are still to be decided.

Humphrey Dobie has been appointed as the new Chairman of Workington Reds. Humphrey replaces Dale Brotherton who resigned in December due to health concerns. Dobie has been Vice-Chairman at the Reds for six years prior to his appointment. Taking on the role of Vice-Chairman is Jos Taylor who has been a hard working member of the Board for over six seasons. We wish them both well in their new roles.

Adam Collin has been invited to train with Carlisle United. The 22 year old keeper has been with Reds for three seasons after joining from Doncaster Rovers in the summer of 2004.

Left back, Joey Kendrick has played a trial match for Drogheda United this week. Kendrick has put in some impressive displays for Reds since joining from Tamworth last month.

PRESS RELEASE
26th JANUARY 2007

The club are now able to announce their second major signing of the day.

Derek Townsley has signed for the Reds from our cross border neighbours Gretna. The 33 year old will be pitched into battle tomorrow when we entertain Hucknall Town at Borough Park. Derek has a wealth of experience having started out with Carlisle United. He then went into local non league football with Gilford Park, where he drew the attention of former Reds managers, George Norrie and Alan Cook to his potential. Reds were beaten to his signature by Gretna manager, Mick McCartney who groomed him into a £10,000 signing for Queen of the South.

A successful period at Palmerston Park saw the scouts flocking to Dumfries. Derek duly signed for Premier League Motherwell in 1999 playing under current Derby County manager, Billy Davies, before another prolific spell at Hibernian. Having played nearly 100 games in the SPL, Ian Atkins signed him for Oxford prior to him returning to Scotland to link up with Rowan Alexander at Gretna, where he helped them achieve two successive promotions and reach the Scottish Cup Final.

Derek can play in a variety of positions and will prove to be a key addition to the talented Reds squad.

PRESS RELEASE
26th JANUARY 2007

The club have signed one player last night and expect the formalities to be completed on another signing this morning to aid Tommy Cassidy in his pursuit of his aims.

Long term target, Joey Kendrick has joined from Conference side, Tamworth and will go straight into the squad for tomorrow’s home fixture versus Hucknall Town (kick off 3pm). Joey started his career under Bobby Robson at Newcastle United before travelling abroad to join TSV 1860 Munich in Germany. The 22 year old then returned to these shores to link up with Darlington, where he made 52 appearances in two years. This season he started out with Torquay United then made his debut with Tamworth in Conference National. The left sided player will add extra bite to the side.

It is also anticipated that another vastly experienced player who has played in the Scottish Premier League for many seasons will join him this morning at Borough Park. The player in question can play in a number of positions. He is finalising matters this morning with his current club and then we can reveal his identity.

News has come in that the Conference have today reached a verdict over the abandoned game versus Redditch United last year. Redditch have been fined the sum of £5,000 (£4,000 to be suspended for one year) and Reds have been awarded the three points. Of course this is all subject to the right of appeal that will last fourteen days. The meeting was held at Burton Abion FC after the Conference EGM that all member clubs attended. These are only the details that have reached us from various news sites at present and more information will be posted in due course

The AGM for shareholders has been announced as been held on Monday, 19th February. Acting Chairman, Humphrey Dobie will lead the meeting. A new Chairman will be appointed the following week at the regular Board meeting to replace Dale Brotherton.

Just a reminder that the Reserves will be at home tomorrow night versus Lancaster City. KO is 7.45pm.

Reds officials spoke with Droylsden officials today at the Conference EGM and the pitch is looking fine for Saturday's visit. However, please remember this was lunchtime on Thursday and the Manchester area has been blighted by rain since. Keep an eye on the weather before setting off on Saturday please.

The Reserve game tonight against Skelmersdale United at Borough Park has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Posted 11/1/07

Tommy Cassidy has called off a proposed training match against Gretna as he looks to protect his charges from any further injury problems ahead of the trip to Hyde on Saturday. Darren Edmondson, Graham Anthony and Steve Birks are all rated extremely doubtful for the trip to Cheshire. Matt Henney is expected to make a recovery following his half time substitution on Monday at Worcester City.

Everybody at the Reds has been extremely shocked at the news of the illness of former Reserve team manager, Alan Nichol. All the Directors, Management, Players and Staff wish Alan a speedy recovery. Alan was in charge of the Reserves from 2001 to 2005.

The Reserves game with Skelmersdale at Borough Park tomorrow night is subject to a pitch inspection in the morning. There has been substanial rain in West Cumbria overnight.

Alan Inglis is to see a specialist next week for a diagnosis of the ligament damage he picked up in last weekend's clash away to Harrogate. Alan has made the left back berth his own since the departure of Tom Cowan and become a favourite of supporters. Everybody at the Club is thinking of Alan.

The County Cup game away at Mirehouse which has been postponed on three occassions will now be played next Tuesday night, 19th December, with a 7.15pm kick off. Should the Mirehouse pitch be deemed unfit then the tie will switch to Borough Park on the same evening.

Posted 14/12/06 at 11.15am

Tonight's game against Mirehouse in the County Cup has been postponed. Both Mirehouse's pitch and the surface at Borough Park have failed pitch inspections due to heavy rain overnight in West Cumbria. A new date for the fixture is being arranged.

Posted 13/12/06

The County Cup game at Mirehouse on Thursday evening (kick off 7.15pm) is subject to a precautionary pitch inspection in the morning. This is due to the inclement weather that is expected across Cumbria. Mirehouse official, Terry Smith said 'at the moment the pitch is heavy but playable. It will be a great honour for us to be in the spotlight playing Workington Reds. Everybody at Mirehouse is looking forward to it'. In the event that the pitch is unplayable at Mirehouse then the game will switch to Borough Park the same evening for a 7.45pm kick off. This will be subject to a pitch inspection as well. You are advised to check this website from 4pm onwards on Thursday to see the exact state of play. Announcements will be given to the local radio stations as well. Tommy Cassidy will be playing his entire first team in the game as he looks to make progress in the competition. Adam Collin is available for selection after serving his one match ban at the weekend against Harrogate.

Chairman, Dale Brotherton has stood down from his position at the Club. Dale has also resigned from the Board of Directors as well. Brotherton took over the role of Chairman at the beginning of the 2000/2001 season and has overseen the progress of the Reds since then. In October 2001 he appointed Tommy Cassidy as Manager replacing Peter Hampton. The Reds have gained two promotions in his time at the helm and have turned around a six figure debt. 'This decision was taken at the end of last week but I didn't tender my resignation until today as I did not want the game at Harrogate to perhaps be overshadowed. I can not give the drive and fight needed to continue in the role at present or the immediate future. These attributes are essential if the club is to continue it's upward curve. Now is the time for someone else to enjoy the role as much as I have. It is a brilliant opportunity for someone to take the club forward and continue to make Borough Park a happy club with a big future. I am proud of the achievements we have made over the last six years and I know that the Club is in a far stronger position than when I inherited the helm from Bill Wilson. I want to thank every player who has pulled on a Reds shirt over the past six years for their efforts and the coaching staff. In Tommy and Tony we have two excellent people of immense pedigree and I hope that the next Chairman will continue a lot of my beliefs but also he must be his own man and be prepared to fight for what is right for Workington Reds. The Directors have been superb in their backing and the voluntary staff at the club are a credit to it in more ways than one. Finally I would like to thank the Supporters and Sponsors who have backed our dreams. The Supporters Club has worked hard to raise funds and do unseen work associated with the Club. The sponsors have been a great fillip to the organisation for their backing and especially Brooks Mileson who has been a major benefactor. We could not have done any of this without you all. I salute you all and sincerely hope the Club will prosper and move forward' said Brotherton

Dale has resigned for health reasons but will continue in a more withdrawn role as Football Secretary.

Young forward, Gareth Arnison is to join Kendal Town on a loan spell. Kendal's new boss, Lee Ashcroft has been blighted by injuries and Tommy Cassidy has allowed the Workington based player to join our Cumbrian neighbours to gain experience. Gareth suffered a foot injury in his last game away at Barrow in the opening stages of the game. Gareth joined us from Morecambe in 2005.

The away fixture at Leigh RMI on News Years Day has been switched to Tuesday, January 2nd with a 7.45pm kick off. The fixture at Worcester City postponed from December 16th due to Worcester's continued participation in the FA Trophy will now take place on Monday 8th January with a 7.45pm kick off.

The away tie in the Cumberland County Cup 3rd Round postponed from last Thursday will now be played this coming Thursday. Kick off time is to be advised.

Alan Inglis has received knee ligament damage from the clash against Harrogate Town at the weekend. Alan has made the left back role his own following the departure of Tom Cowan. He is likely to be out for at least a month.
